My mom called me last night and asked me to help her with a fishy problem She recently bought some fancy leather purse and she is claiming it smells like a fish. I didn't believe her at first...so I drove over and smelled myself...and the purse DOES smell like a dried fish Any idea how to get this fishy smell out?

What type of leather is it? Has it been cleaned yet?

And where is the bag made, how was it tanned? If it is goat hide, and made in any place like Pakistan, the tanning is likey to be urine, and the only way to get rid of the smell is to toss the bag in the trash, or weather it outdoors a pretty long time.

I believe it was made in Morocco and it was treated to be soft. It is brown leather.

Try making a sachet filled with baking soda (maybe a couple of layers of old nylons tied into a bag). Leave it in there for a while and see if that helps.

Does it have a silk lining, by any chance? Raw silk can have a very fishy odor.

YEH..raw silk = gross..lol
I think it smells like cat pee until you wash it out.

I would wash it up with saddle soap, do the baking soda thing and let it sit in the sun. Soften it up again with some mink oil and then wash it off with dawn dishsoap if it still smells. Keep re-oiling with mink oil and washing. You can take it to have it cleaned too but the rewash should get it. Just do not skip the oil because it helps pull out the smell and prevents the leather from drying out. Make sure the mink oil is absorbed before using it. Rub the outside down with a REAL wool shammy to buff it in and remove excess.

I would return it. You could spend a lot of time and money trying different methods to clean it and get rid of the smell, but if those methods don't work you'll probably have a harder time getting the store to take it back than if you go back right now.

The smell goes away. I used to work at a drycleaners that dealt with leather. All freshly tanned leather stinks as does all raw silk. I mean, it is dead skin and bug puke if you really look at it honestly. How could it not stink?
