Quote "And then there are people who make wild assumptions about others based on their clothing."
So I suppose that if a cowboy in a ten gallon hat and two big six shooters with his hands on both of them walks toward you down the street you certainly won't make any wild assumptions?
I'd assume he's in a play or something, that's not a wild assumption, that's a perfectly reasonable assumption even if it's incorrect. My point was that if someone dresses sloppy, it may be reasonable to assume they are... well.. sloppy! But to assume that someone who dresses sloppy must be loud, rude, callous and uncaring... well, I really don't see the connection, therefore, those are unreasonable assumptions to make about people.
I figured this would be an interesting discussion for a Tuesday. When you stop and think about it, do you like the fact America is largley a casual nation in terms of dress. Do you wish we were somewhat more formal in some respects. Discuss
No, I don't like sloppiness. I like boundaries, definition, and order.
Again, the OP asked about casual, not sloppy. They are not the same thing.
They're in the same ballpark, especially in regard to the things we see today, in the US. People are overweight and sloppy...shirts hanging out so you can't see how big they are...hair all over the place...unshaven...armpits showing...tank tops...feet showing.

Not where I'm from, people are casual but not sloppy. I don't think you can lump every location in the US into one like that.
But why are tank tops and "feet showing" sloppy? Just because they show more skin? As long as I'm clean and well groomed, I see no reason why I should cover up in 80-90 degree weather unless the situation or event calls for it. Maybe you have a problem with showing more skin but that's not the definition of sloppy.
I can't deny that I notice tasteful clothing, and appreciate aesthetic value in something that appears tidy, fitted, and is just, in general, pleasing to the eye.
However, I think that what we consider to be pleasing to the eye is just, in most cases, a form of conditioning.
I don't think it should matter how others dress. I don't understand why it is so important to some. Although I DO look at some outfits and attire and think "ugh" or "holy wow, what are they thinking?" I understand that there's no cause for me to concern myself with their attire, and keep these thoughts to myself or to a close companion that understands my thoughts.
Nonfunctional dress codes upset me. Grow up, America, so that others can be themselves and you can see passed shallow and material things like style of dress.
