Hello! I am currently living in semi-rural Illinois and considering taking a job in Siloam Springs. I am trying to research as much as possible about the city (and the surrounding communities) before I make the leap and uproot my family (my wife and 2 year old daughter).

A little background on us ... we are very quite people and enjoy the semi-rural/small town feel. Our idea of a good night out is finding a great place to hike or just sitting around to enjoy the outdoors. Everything we do is as a family and a small welcoming community is right up our ally.

Any information on the following topics, or any related topics for that matter, would be greatly appreciated.

How are the schools?

If I was to work in Siloam Springs, which city would be the best place for us to live? Why?

How is the local crime rate?

How is the cost of living?

If we did want to get away for a night out on the town or in a decent sized city, where would we go and how long would it take us to get there?

Answers to any of these questions would be greatly appreciated. Or if you have any other information you think would help us in our decision, please post!

Thanks in advance!!

I might be able to help. My family (but not myself) used to live in Siloam Springs.

Decent. They're better than the schools in Gravette, Pea Ridge, and Gentry but not on the same par as Bentonville, Rogers (which has two high schools), and Fayetteville.

Their website is Siloam Springs School District

Likely Siloam Springs. It's population is around 15,000 and outside the sprawl around Wal-Mart and the historic downtown, it has a pretty rural character and you could easily find some acreage on the outskirts of town that would be a short commute.
How is the local crime rate?

I don't know about wages in rural Illinois but the average income for a family in Siloam Springs is around $41,000 (according to wiki) and that's higher than the average for that part of the region but I wouldn't say Siloam is pricier than where I live. (Loaf of bread : $1.39, half-gallon of milk is $1.69)

The only unanswered question was crime rate. Siloam Springs is below the national average, and hasn't recorded any murders in ten years. It would be a fine place to live.

The only crime generator I could think of is that Siloam Springs is on the border with Cherokee Nation. I am pretty sure that there is a casino right on the city limits.

There is, it is on the OK side of course.

I would add a couple of things that I am sure will surprise some. ARk Red mentioned the schools and compared them with PeaRridge. The latest scores came out about 3 weeks ago, Pea Ridge was near the top for Ar schools in several catagories. Apparently their schools have changed some.

That being said, Siloam Springs is a nice little, very rural place to raise a family and there are other surrounding areas (very close) you could also consider. Even though I cal it rural within 15 minutes you can be in the city.

Nita, is there somewhere online where I can find the school rankings you mentioned? I am new to the whole "worry about school districts" things as this is my first child, and I would like to see some information on it.

Thanks!

Hi jittrbug,
Great Schools is a pretty nice resource for looking up information about school districts, student achievement, and some had parent comments and reviews on there too. I don't know which specific list Nita is referring to, but I do remember headlines a little while back about some of the small districts doing very well.
Here's a link to Siloams ratings: Schools in Siloam Springs School District - Siloam Springs, AR | GreatSchools
A 7 is respectable, but not in the same running as most of the larger districts in the area (and some of the small ones). There are some parent reviews there, so maybe there's something insightful in them.
To compare, here's Bentonville:
Bentonville School District Overview | GreatSchools
And Fayetteville:
Fayetteville School District Overview | GreatSchools (I distinctly disagree with several of those ratings based off what I know about the elementary schools, so maybe I'm putting too much faith in Great Schools.)
Good luck!

i don't know, but there must be. It was, as I said in the paper I think Sunday, June 20th. I was really surprised to see Pea Ridge on the list. It was the highschool that had improved so much. But where high schools start improving the lower grades usually follow.

I do know the tops school districts in Benton and Washington county are Bentonville and Fayetteville. Let me see if I can find a link for you.

Nita

There is no question about it, the best schools in the NWA area are Har-Ber, Fayetteville, and Bentonville. The others may be good schools too, but those are among the best in the state.

Remember there are a lot of things that skew these school rankings.

Springdale and Rogers are right up there with Bentonville and Fayetteville as far as quality, they are just home to a LOT more immigrants that skew the results drastically down.

You're kids would be fine in Siloam. Don't put all your faith in these ratings websites. Just talk to someone who actually goes to the schools. Every school has a very different make-up and a rating of a 7/10 doesn't make them equal in the least bit.
