I am moving from Florida to attend the graduate program at University of Arkansas. Any advice about apartments, safety, shopping, or campus life will help. I've only really been browsing apartments. I want to find a place that I can either walk, bike, or bus to campus and grocery store. But really any information you think someone moving to this town should know will be helpful.

THANKS!

The area directly around campus is real hit and miss. North Leverett Ave is usually a place to avoid but there are some decent places there if you look. There are some nice complexes south of the university near MLK. Hill Place is a new complex that I've heard people talk about but I'm not sure what the bus route is like on that side of campus. Try to avoid anywhere ran by Sweetser properties. They tend to be run down and I've heard people having issues with rental agreements and maintenance with them.

Be warned, Hill Place is one of those "student" complexes, where you just lease your furnished bedroom in the apartment and the common areas. You are not leasing the entire apartment, assuming it's not a one bedroom. This is one of those complexes where they can put anyone in the other bedrooms in your apartment. If you don't have roommates lined up to lease the other rooms in the apartment, you could end up living with strangers.

Good luck. The University of Arkansas is a great school and Fayetteville is one of those great college towns. Enjoy your time there.

There are some brand new apartments just to the East of Old Main just off Maple. They are kind of tucked behind some houses. They would be perfect for walking to campus and not too far from Dickson St. and downtown. Only concern would be for more construction and revitalization in that area sometime in the future.

@tracemo~what grad program are you entering? It might make a difference in what section of F'ville I recommend For example, if you're business or engineering, you'll want to be on the south side of campus. Poultry science or education, you'll find better walkability by being on the north side of campus. Feel free to pm.

RE: groceries--Harps Grocery is located at Garland and North St; a new mini-Walmart recently opened in the new UofA Garland Street garage complex
