My daughter is considering the University of Arkansas and we will be visiting the campus next month. I understand there are a lot of students from Texas. Coming from Houston, what do you think we need to think about as possible transfers? What are the pros and cons with being an "outsider". Thank you!

I don't know of any cons for being from Texas. Somewhere around 25% of the student body was from Texas last time I checked (most from the DFW area, but Houston is pretty well represented as well), and it feels like you see as many Texas license plates around campus as you do Arkansas ones some days . It's a beautiful area, but some of the Houston students have issues with the weather (it does get cold!) and how much smaller it is.

I second the wizard. After all, it's Texas, not Afghanistan. It's just another state in the Union.

She won't even feel like an outsider. There are tons of Texans at the U of A.As an Arkansan who spends tons of time in Texas- there are so many similarities in the 2 states- it will won't be culture shock at all.Rest assured.

She won't feel like an outsider. I've even seen GASP those Texas Longhorn decals on cars in the student parking lot. Oh the humanity!

Seriously, she'll be fine. UofA is a great college and Fayetteville is a great place to live.

8 years ago, our granddaughter was at the same stage of her life. After visiting a lot of universities includin Texas A&M, she decided she liked AR the best. At that time we lived in NM and she and her family just outside of Dallas. Now she is AR through and thruogh, is married to a guy who also was originally from Texas and she convinced us to move here when we decided we wanted to leave NM. Add to this, her mom and dad now live in NWA. I guess that answers your question.

I would add, she did join a sorority, which she thinks helped her make more friends, but she also had and still has a lot of friends that were not in a sorority.

There are so many Texans here that I wonder if there's any left in Texas.

Where I live is just beyond "the middle of nowhere", and there are 3 farms in the area owned by Texans.

and I talked to my granddaughter this morning: She said there were kids at U or A from the Houston area than from the Dallas area when she was there. We have a lot of neighbors here that are from Texas as well or certainly have lived in Texas (like us)
