Hello.

My husband may be applying for a PhD program at the University of Arkansas beginning next fall. The University of Arkansas has all of his criteria, but applying depends on if I can find work while he is in school. I am hoping for some insight from the forum to see if this is possible. I have two types of jobs I will be looking for.

The first is private voice lessons. I’m a classically trained singer and had a successful studio in Ohio for 3 years (Currently in Florida until grad school starts). Ohio seemed to be big into ‘show choirs’ and such. Is there an interest for voice lessons in Fayetteville?

The second is in the mental health field. On top of studying music, I also have education in psychology/crisis counseling. I am interested in victim advocate work or something similar. I’ve searched for jobs around the area, just so I can see what might be available if we move there, but I have not come up with too much.

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I certainly can't tell you where to look for work, but I can assure you being in the medical field, whether metal health or any other field, you should have no trouble finding a job. The part about voice lessons that I have no clue about. I also can only suggest, you keep researching on the net for leads and ideas about working in the mental health field. I am sure the VA hospital, in Fayetteville would have career opportunities for you.

Also look into the Ozark Guidance Center for mental health jobs.

As for voice lessons, I think there's probably interest in the region. There's lots of money in northwest Arkansas thanks to Wal-Mart, JB Hunt, and Tyson Foods, so I'd think there'd be a market for voice lessons. If you open your net to include Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville (all part of the same metro area that Fayetteville is in), then you can probably find some takers. If you are able to teach children, then even better.

Private "anything" lessons are in demand. You just have to know where to look. Start with the students at the UofA and work backwards--high school, junior highs, even middle schools.

Heck, even some of the theatre groups are good leads--Arts Live is for children/teens; Theatre2 might also be able to give you some feedback if there is niche to be filled

Regarding "social services", there will always be a need in NWA. With your background you could go two ways--private practice or public service. My first thoughts were Peace at Home (the womens' shelter) and Casa of NWA. While googling for Casa, I hit the United Way site. This would be a good place to start.

Good luck.

Another good place to look and this is what our grandkids have been doing is: get in touch with a really good recruiter. That is where you often find the best jobs. Our grandkids have had great luck: one is about to finish Nurse Practitioner school (about 6 more weeks) one is an accountant and the other has a degree in management.

Thank you everyone!! This is giving me a lot of places to explore. My husband's PhD program is very competitive, so we'll see if he gets in. We'll know sometime after the new year.

Thanks again!
