I'm thinking in moving to Fayetteville without getting a car and I wonder if I can fulfil the basic needs, shopping, groceries, etc using the public transportation? Actually is there any public transportation system in Fayetteville at all? Not much info googling.

Thanks.

Google "Ozark Transit".

Public transportation is limited.

I think it would be hard to move to Northwest Arkansas not knowing the area and try to use the public transportation system for ALL your needs. But I think that someone who knows the area and has lived here for a while could navigate the transit system well enough to meet their day-to-day needs. The buses go to almost all the shopping centers, to the libraries, to many of the apartment complexes, and so on. It's time consuming, though, and if your employer isn't one of the major employers, then, yes, absolutely, you'll need a car, bike, something.

Actually I work remotely, all I need is my laptop and Wi-Fi and I'm deciding between the safest and cheapest cities. My list:
Cedar Rapids, IA
Columbia, SC
Wichita falls, TX
Fayetteville, AR
Idaho falls, ID

The city that scores the most, wins for me. So looks like Fayetteville loses the score on the transport thing.

I would be surprised if any of those cities have stellar public transportation.

There are only a few cities in the US where it's really feasible to go without a car.

I've done it in Arkansas before, it may not be feasible depending on your lifestyle, but it is physically possible. I was about 2 blocks from dominoes pizza one time though, that didn't hurt, I think they liked me because they knew I was an easy delivery.
Working from a computer would make it a lot easier. Sometimes I even find good deals on food on Amazon these days.

just remember you really can't depend on few studies and stats to give you truly "best" of anything. They change, depending on who is conducting them, most of these list change monthly. I have seen lists that have a city at the top and the next year the same or similar city will not even mention that one. Now, as for not having a car and not feeling somewhat isolated, none of the cities you have listed will have a decent rapid transit system, they are just not large enough. Well, lets' just say, most likely they won't. Ell

Fayetteville has Razorback Transit and Ozark Regional Transit. Neither is as reliable or frequent as a "big city" bus service. I would think that a person could live in downtown Fayetteville and rarely need a car due to the amenities there. The university campus is also pretty much a self-contained environment that a person rarely, if ever, needs to leave in order to access most services.

If you are a cyclist, the Fayetteville trail system makes not having a car an even more viable option. It spans most of the city, with dedicated trails that access commercial areas, the University of Arkansas, downtown, and many neighborhoods.
