I would like to visit my family in Beaumont, TX during the week of Christmas but plane tickets are a bit expensive at that time. Would it be safe to drive through the mountains then?

It should be. Our mountains are not like the CA mountains, or the Rockies. They are not that bad and we rarely get a lot of crappy weather much before Christmas. No one can guarantee anything. but you should be ok, just be prepared for a little longer trip than usual.

It should be fairly safe to travel south even with the unpredictable weather we get during the holiday season.

After driving home from NY last Christmas season during a storm with 0 visibility, I vowed not to take that trip anymore so our annual trip will happen during the summer.

Driving through the snow from Chicago was just too dangerous to take that risk again. Road conditions were much better after we got south of Bella Vista.
