I was wondering if anyone has any information on the art scene in Kauai. my girlfriend and I are considering moving there from philadelphia. I am dying to go but she is extremely worried about whether she will be able to find work doing what she loves. she recently graduated with her masters in fine arts and would prefer to teach, work at a gallery, or buy/sell. She also wants to have opportunites to show her work at a gallery. I am not sure what kauai has to offer as far as careers/jobs. I will be fine wherever I go as I have not yet figured out my path in life. I'm thinking of going back to school. I know they have schools there! i am really hoping to have some positive feedback so i can reassure her. a place like Kauai is my dream. We are fairly young so we would literally be starting our life there....

Might want to post this in the Hawaii forum.

If you want to work in the art world in terms of art and people being "worldly", there are three places: NYC, Los Angeles, Santa Fe and I would extend it to cities around those metros (Like Philly is to NYC). If you want art, local art, then you can just about go anywhere and you'll find an art scene albeit small, very small.

Hawaii, when I recollect "art", does not come up on the radar. I've never been, I'd imagine it's more "arts & craft" scene which is prevalent in a lot of small beach cities in Calif, it's very kitschy, Kinkade-ish, and while there may be some sort of awareness of this ongoing "world art" dialogue, it only ends up being some cheap imitation of it. And certainly this is just my view, generally speaking, it certainly is a possibility that one's dreams can come true anywhere, who knows, perhaps your partner maybe that exceptional -- of course every kid attending "art school" thinks that so, there you go ...

Anyways, good luck. Funny, I'm thinking of heading out towards Philly for being nearer to "art". I'm well aware of my excessive quotes, in this case they are just indicative of subjectivity with a slight disparagement -- .

If you make funny little character faces out of coconut shells and poster paint, you'll do great in Hawaii. You might be able to sell some subsets on black velvet.
