During September 2001- January 2002 a special and unique exhibit "Studio of the South" at the
Art Institute of Chicago had a remarkable collection of Gauguin and Van Gogh paintings when the
2 artists shared a home/studio in Arles, France (set up by Van Gogh).
The purpose was to immerse themselves to forge a new path in modern art.
There were paintings by both that I never saw before (some in private collections). I have to admit
that Van Gogh's paintings were not only incredibly impressive but clearly showed his dedication
and obsession to paint. This temporary experience was a creative pilgrimage for the two of them.
Here are some not so well known pieces by Van Gogh and a few of my favorites.
I'll bet few could easily guess this was Vincent's work [I certainly couldn't ]:
Hmmm...curious if Mr. Bacon saw it and what he thought of it. I'd think he got ideas from it.
And those dark clouds above the Church sure look ominous.
A new favorite from the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam -- Rembrandt's The Night Watch. Saw it last year and was transfixed.
