Many larger cities have aquarium clubs that hold fish auctions open to members and non-members. You may be able to purchase fish for 1/2 or less the price in pet stores, and you may be able to find varieties that you are unlikely to see in pet stores. Hobbiests sell their excess fish, or adult fish they have bred. I have never had a problem with the health of purchases. In addition you can usually get expert advise from the folks in attendance.

they can be very good sources for getting hold of some interesting species too that arnt readily available in stores...and many of the advanced hobbiests have lines a bajilliontimes better and healthier than anythign you can find in a fish/pet shop...

as long as your carefull about quarrenteining new fish, just as you should be no matter where you buy from...
then they can be great sources!

I went to my first fish show and auction last fall, it was pretty interesting! I didn't buy anything because my youngest child didn't have the patience to wait, but if I'd had the time, I definitely would have. I saw some very nice fish. Foxywench, I went to the one in Norwalk, I know you are in Ct., have you by any chance been to the Norwalk show and auction before?

There were a lot of nice fish at the Cincinnati, OH auction last Saturday. Several dozen bags of nice veil angelfish and a spectacular pair of discus that sold for $150. Prices seemed to be about half retail, good for the buyer and seller. Quite a few nice plants as well.
