Okay, so it's just a fish, but I love this little guy! I had a sudden desire to add a fish to the home, since I've always loved having them... but I've been known to KILL many in my time (my mother jokes about them having a wanted sign for me in fishy heaven, LOL), so I had to get something low-maintenance. I ended up purchasing a beautiful Betta, who I've named RuPaul - couldn't resist, since he's a boy with beautiful flowing "hair" & some major pizazz! He is mostly purple, with some red highlights around his fins, and I think he's just gorgeous... tried to get a picture, but nothing came out very well.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my new addition, and ask if anyone has advice on their care. I bought him a 1-gallon plastic tank, which has an under-rock filter and lid (since I heard they can jump). I'm feeding him the Betta pellets, about 3-4 once a day, and he seems happy with that. Oh, and here's something I'd never seen before... my cat jumped up to look at the tank, and he immediately swam to the edge and puffed out his "cheek fins!" Sorry I don't know the technical word for it, but he was obviously trying to look tough for the kitty. Too funny! He seems to like me though, and swims up & down when I put my face near the tank. So, does anyone else have a Betta, and if so can you offer some words of wisdom? Thanks in advance, and I'll post pictures if I can get any decent ones.

Your fish will love you...

Me and my husband got a new Betta several weeks ago. Before I tell you anything, I don't know why he puffed out his cheek fins ON A CAT, but if you take a mirror and put it next to his/her tank, they'll think that they see another Betta, and they'll do the same thing!!!It's pretty funny to watch ( I know, me and my husband are crazy...). Anyway, we feed our Betta twice a day ( several pellets ) - we have a pretty fatty Betta, but it's cool if you give her several pellets just once a day. That's how we used to do with our previous fish, and they lived a long while ( except one... ). We also have the same tank like you have, and we change its water once a month ( approximately ).

I hope you enjoy your fish.

You know, I had Bettas at one time and I don't know why I don't have them now....thanks for bringing this up! I think I'll just go get myself one or 5 - I feel so sorry for them in those little paper cups.

You can get those swimming frogs to live with them, they won't bother them...and mine actually did SO much better in the 1 gallon tank than anything bigger or smaller. We fed ours those frozen whatever red worms from the pet store once every couple of weeks and they loved that....a cube would feed one fish 3 or 4 times. We had a tank in every room...now we have dogs in every room....

Well, I think I'll just go get me a fish. I don't have any cute names in mind but I do think they are pretty......now if I can just figure out where the aquariums would be....

Aww!! I had a Betta when I was about 15! I named him Pimp Daddy just because I thought it fit him and it was funny! I have been wanting to get a fish too, every time I go to the pet store to get something for our pups I always look at the fish! As far as care, it's sounds like you have it under control, the thing I like about Betta's is that they are pretty low maintenance! I also had a tank full of tropical fish when I was younger and that was a pain in the butt! They were beautiful though! Bettas are funny fish! If you hold a mirror up to the tank he will go crazy! Don't hold it there too long through, some of them will smash into the side of the tank trying to get to the fish that they see. Oh, and it's a good thing you have a lid! I learned that the hard way, Pimp Daddy lived in a big gold fish bowl and no one told me that it needed a lid! He got out of the bowl 3 times before I realized that I should probably get a lib, thank God I was there every time he got out! I got soo attached to that fish and it broke my heart when he died! He got this lump on his head, I can't remember what it's called, but there is stuff you can put in the water to help it go away. It didn't go away though and he died from it, but he lived for years! Everyone was always so amazed that he was still alive every time they came over! I can't remember how long he lived, but I remember it was very, very, very long for a fish! Next time I talk to my mom, I'll ask her and see if she remembers. Anyway, it sounds like you have everything under control. Betta's are great fish and you will love having him! Good luck!

Hi Gizmo 980!

Oh the memories you bring back...I had 2 beta's in early 2000 when they seemed to be all the rage! Your RuPaul sounds a lot like my Roscoe...same color purple with red & orange...he was a beauty & I think he knew he had many admirers :-)

I gave Roscoe the pellets also & he seemed to enjoy them. He would blow up at my other baby (lab puppy) every time he jumped up to take a peek at him so we tried to discourage that...but it was too funny :-)

Roscoe just quit eating one day around the 4th year I had him & before I could consult my vet or any other specialist he was in fishy heaven. I was so upset even my dog knew something was wrong & seemed to mourn with me!

Someone once told me to watch to see if your beta is a top or bottom dweller...meaning whether they spend the majority of their time hanging out when not swimming on top or on bottom. I noticed mine loved the top.
I did take note that right before he stopped eating years later he just seemed to drag along the bottom & didn't spend his last day or 2 frolicking or "playful" at the top. I think this may have been a warning sign :-(

Take good care of RuPaul...you'll have so much fun with him!!!
