That is true, with sand its easier to suck up the waste but you have to do it more frequently. Also if you have a heavily planted tank the waste also acts as nutrients as it seeps through the gravel, although the occasion vac was still required.

Best sand to use i've found is Pool Filter Sand. It's decent sized sand that lacks a lot of the finer bits like play sand that cause the water to cloud up. 50 lbs should do a 55gal easily. Rinse it first before using. Best part is its cheap...$15 or less.

I'm using PFS in a 75 gallon Oscar tank now that has live plants. very natural and you can stir the sand up without clouding the water
