We have a couple of bettas. We also have apple snails to clean the tanks. I am curious to those that have the same: have you noticed what seems to be a fondness for the snail from the fish? Every time we take a peek at their world. The fish is swimming up to us all puffed out as to say "back away".

Well, mine does that too, but he only has a bushy nosed pleco for company, and the pleco is usually hiding. I don't think it's protective behavior, at least not protective of the tank mate. I think it's just the way Bettas are.

Hold up a makeup mirror and see what happens!
Bettas seem more comfortable with a few slow fish/invertebrates in the tank to interact with.
Like Oscars, I suspect they're pretty smart.....for a fish.

I've had one live for over six years plus, and a friend has one in a planted tank with lots of
things to peck at that she insists is well over eight years, and was grown when she received it!!
