Hi all - My Betta, RuPaul, is doing quite well in his little 1-gallon tank without a filter or heater... but after reading some posts on here & elsewhere, I'm thinking he would be MUCH happier in a better set-up. Only being stubborn because I got a Betta thinking it wouldn't need anything fancy, but of course now I want to provide him with the best home. So for the fish "experts," what would you suggest? I can't afford to spend a fortune, so I'm thinking a 2-3 gallon with a bio-wheel filter (is that what it's called?) would be sufficient. Also, my snail died this week, so I'll need to replace him since the tank is already getting algae-filled... what would you recommend? Another snail, or something else a bit heartier? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Oh, and does anyone know if the Eclipse systems are okay for a Betta? I used to have one for my other fish (various kinds), and liked how quiet & gentle it was... RuPaul doesn't seem to like the standard/noisy filters much, since he'll sit on the bottom of the tank when it's running.

Bernie's Cove is a complete tank setup for a betta. All Glass makes Mini-Bow acrylic tanks that come with hood, light and a very quiet filter. I picked up a 2-1/2 gallon one on sale at Petco for $25 (but earlier got a 5 gallon one for $12). It came with a betta divider so you can keep two in the same tank if you want. Walmart sells a $5 bulb that is a great alternative to the incandescent types that come with small tanks. It is 10 watts but gives off light like 40 or 50 watts and doesn't get so hot.

Eclipse systems could be used though they are more expensive.

What did you finally get?

Sadly, RuPaul died last week (of dropsy, I believe). But thanks for the info, and I'll keep it in mind if I get another Betta.
