Family will be going on vacation and wanted to see if there are any recommendations for a good, reliable automated fish feeder that can dispense a small amount of flake food for 2 goldfish.

I have this one, and it's worked well for two years now with the same batteries. After we got back from vacation I just kept using it, just have to refill about once a month.

I do, and mine is adjustable for amount of food, and can be set to feed twice a day.
Yes, I used flake food. The size of opening on the Eheim feeder can be adjusted to accommodate anything from large flakes to fine granules, and the feeder can be programmed to dispense food up to four times a day. The only real fault it has is a tendency to tip forward if you have too much food in the hopper.

One warning, on the automatic feeder I have, and may apply to others. I installed a new, very large air stone, and it happened to be just below the feeder. After a couple of days I noticed that no food was dropping when it kicked on. IOt6 turns out that the splashing of the air bubbles had caused the flakes to cake inside the feeder. I had to clean it out, dry well, refill, and move the air stone to the far corner. That did the trick.
Worked well and did not make a mess. I had to adjust the opening to match the small quantity that we normally feed the fish. Once that was done, I tested it a couple of days before we actually left. The fish made it fine.
