I live in an area that has extremely hard city water. There is a large amount of lime in it, and glassware will be covered in a chalky film if I let a glass of water sit and dry.

I've often thought about setting up a freshwater aquarium, something focused on water plants more than fish. However, I know that the water will turn the glass near the top of the aquarium into stucco. Since I don't know how to keep the glass reasonably clear, I've never bothered to set up an aquarium.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Is there any way to force the lime to precipitate out?

I don't have a water softener system, and I've always thought the salt is not good for aquariums anyway.

I wash mine out with lemon juice occasionally, but remove fish clean and then refill. My 55 gallon cannot do that alot so I just wipe down more to keep cleaner.

Hubby suggests you try a Reverse Osmosis unit which is a pressurized system. Try Fosters and Smith.com or call them at 1- 800- 443-1160. We have been dealing with them for about 10 years and are satisfied. Good luck!
