Anyone know the answer to this? I have one and he is all I have because he is aggressive and killed my other fish. I am kinda wanting to get rid of him and wondered if I could release him in the wild. I dont want to kill him of course so would like to know if he would survive this. Thanks!

I really doubt it. Why not try and turn him back in to a pet store or aquarium store for credit or trade for another fish. I have done this a few times.

Please do not release domestic fish into the wild (whether it will survive or not). This is not the responsible thing to do. Take it to a LFS or put it on Craigslist. Somone witha big tank may be able to give it a new home.

If you're just going to "give" him to the lake, why not "give" him to a pet store. Often times, people w/ large aquariums or ponds are looking for a larger pleco. You can even offer him on Craigsist before throwing him out.

Its illegal to release non-native plants and animals into the wild.
Its unethical to release natives into the wild.
Non-natives that often thrive and have cost us millions and millions to try to eradicate.
Be responsible!

Please do not release him into the wild. It can harm wildlife in so many ways. Put an ad on any of the pet sites, free to good home. Someone will want him that has room for him. Many people are looking for the larger ones.

Re-homing a big plecostomus should be pretty easy. I wouldn't take him to petsmart or anything like that, but a specialty aquarium or fish store would take him in a heartbeat.

I'm not sure if a single pleco released into a pond or a lake would have much of an impact, but I would echo the sentiments of others here.

Petsmart wont take back fish unless it's within 14 days of purchase. But you can try a mom & pop shop pet store, as they might. Or put an ad on craigslist for a free pleco.

The pleco will die if thrown into the lake, please dont do it. It will also disturb whatever is already living in the body of water..

Both Petco and PetSmart have taken too large fish from me and gave me store credit or another fish. In fact, just exchanged an Chinese Algae Eater in about 2 weeks ago for another bottom feeder.

Don't release it!

However, plecos can live fine in lakes, ponds or rivers as long as there are no hard freezes. Here in SA, there are many living (and breeding) in the San Antonio river where it run thru the zoo, and for a little distance downstream. Florida also has commercial pleco breeding ponds.

They like to lay their eggs in mud banks.
