does anyone know if the drive from san bernadino to flagstaff on I-15 North and then I-40 East to flagstaff is as steep as the drive from phoenix to flagstaff on I-17 North which is to me a steep drive uphill which I would prefer to avoid. I am trying to make driving plans for my trip. Thanks

Not as steep, its more of a gradual increase in elevation with a few ups and downs. Nothing nearly as dramatic as what you encounter along I-17 north of Black Canyon City, descending into Camp Verde and past Sedona.

The drive on I-40 between Barstow and Kingman is boring as all get out, though.

That's an easy drive and your best route with one exception and that would be weather this time of the year.
Watch in advance for storms as 40 can get snow and winds that can close it at times.
Just check the WX forecast before you leave for that area and you should be fine.
Here is the AZ DOT site to check for road problems too. Arizona Department of Transportation

as said, not as bad as I-17, but there are a few mountainous areas: the area just N of San Ber'do as you go thru the San Gabriels, the stretch E of Kingman and 93 as you wind your way to Seligman, and Ash Fork Hill, just E of Ash Fork as you climb up into the pines toward Williams.....none of this is as steep as I-17, but pay attention.....

I think that stretch of the 15 going north of San Bernardino through the San Gabriels is called the Cajon Pass. Its fun to drive down, but no so much to drive up...

What about the golf ball house? That's pretty special.

I-15 is a dangerous highway, and in the Cajon Pass section very dangerous, with many crashes. My impression is the exact opposite; northbound is a steep climb but not that bad, and then an easy descent. Southbound from the summit until past the scales is a different matter. Immediate steep drop and then a sharp left turn makes for hightened alertness. Cajon can be very windy, and can be foggy, rainy, and in winter, can be closed by snow.

But if you stop and take a break in Laughlin and enjoy the casino action and enjoy the hospitality the town offers it makes the drive worthwhile.
