I moved to Prescott in Aug/2015, and even though I knew in theory that there were different creatures and bugs than I saw in Colorado, I'm not coping well. The scorpions and Giant Centipedes (8-10 inches long) are freaking me out. The apartment has exterminators spray twice a month, but they still come in, and then there are rattlesnakes and baby ones (more lethal since they can't regulate their venom at a young age.).
I can't afford the $2000+ penalty to break my lease, and assume all of Arizona has similar issues. I actually retired early with a disability so I have very limited funds, and hoped to stay here for life. Now I am thinking of the Pacific Northwest when my lease is up. I'm sure they have their own issues too.

Any advice is appreciated.
Dianne

"All of Arizona" does not have similar issues. You actually have rattlesnakes (and baby ones) in and around your home, or are you talking about being out walking in the country? I've never seen a centipede in 50 plus years of living in the Valley, and scorpions are a hit and miss proposition in those areas where they exist.... lots of people have never seen them. You can't control them with just any bug spray, so it depends on what the exterminators are using.

Rattlers in the NW are bigger! More to eat.

Our yard is a toxic waste zone. We kill everything, no bugs, no scorpions. No mice, no snakes.

It'll be getting cold soon and the crawlies will stop. Or move inside...

Keep your doors closed. Use a light at night. Have a shovel handy - the square blade kind. They work for all three uglies.

Our new house is about a block from wild desert. Neighbors say we get snakes, one said he's killed five, but I haven't seen one yet. Our yard has block snake proof walls, with anti-snake rubber on the gates. It is virtually impossible for a snake to get into the yard. We don't leave the garage door open.

Beats Florida - nothing gets your heart started in the morning than being about to dive into the pool, to discover that shadow isn't a cloud but an 8' alligator waiting for breakfast!

Why does someone move a block from the wild desert then want to kill everything? Sorry but I don't understand that at all. Living in a high rise might have been be a better choice.

yep we do..... timber rattlers, copperheads, black bears, coyotes, deer, wild turkeys, black widows, brown recluse and I'm sure more. We live at the edge of the Pisgah National Forest on 10 acres with nature up close and personal. They were here first and we respect that fact. We have chosen to make their habitat our home, no one forced us to live here so we keep ours eyes and ears open for our critter neighbors.

I moved to Arizona 3 years ago and I'm still freaked out by the scorpions and spiders. I get scorpions in my house. The first 2 years weren't too bad, because I only had them during monsoon, but then we had a wet fall and winter and I've had them in my house since February, even with regular pest control. Most of the critters have been worse this year than normal. First 2 years I didn't get the toxic toads and now I suddenly have them. Same with the giant centipedes and some other critters I didn't see my first 2 years here. I hope we have a drier fall and winter this year so we don't have a repeat of this in the coming year. That said, I love Arizona, so I'm trying to deal with the critters, but I sure would be happier without the scorpions, spiders, toxic toads and centipedes. I can deal with the rattlers, tarantulas and other desert creatures, if those other 4 would just stay away from my house.

Vacationing now in Sedona; with two small kids it means constant supervision. Hoping we get out of here without any bites.
(We're visiting my in-laws; we resisted their entreaties to visit up until now. I don't think we will be back anytime soon due to the stress of scorpions, etc.)
