..and I have found several online buy searching "senior low-income housing". I would really like to meet others that might also be low-income, and live in the Flagstaff area. I pick Flagstaff as a starting point for high desert living. I live in a subsidized building now, that will be hard to leave due to excellent staff, lovely apartments, and a Senior Center that has everything for Seniors, information-wise (senior services, Agency on Aging).

My health is forcing me to look at dryer areas, specifically allergies. I also just "feel" all-around healthier in a dryer climate. I recently visited the area, and for 2 weeks, I noticed a huge change (for the good) in how I felt.

I have several retired friends in AZ, but they are in places like Quartzite, and Yuma. I now live in a tiny town, and have to travel at least 2 hours to get to a specialist such as cardiologist, or orthopedic.

I want to live closer to a larger city so that a job might be easier for me to find. I don't like being low-income and needing subsidized housing, and I am plenty healthy enough to do at least a part-time job.

So I do see the seasons are cold in the Winter, and truly mild compared to what I thought they would be. It snows I see, but it is still a MUCH dryer climate, and I do like the altitude.

If there is anyone that knows about subsidized housing for low-income seniors, I would love to hear from you. I don't qualify for the type that is something to do with Tax Credits, I don't bring home enough at this point.

Thank you in advance for any information, or possibly, other areas to look at. I am also considering New Mexico, probably Santa Fe, so far.

Fair warning, COL will be higher in Sedona and Flagstaff. I suggest checking out Cottonwood or even Verde Valley.

Check this site out.

Thank you but almost any place I move is going to be lower than what the COL is here. I'm more concerned with the weather being dryer, and I'm not sure that is going to be the case in Flagstaff. I've done a bit more research since I did this post and looking at other areas as well.

Thank you for the link and I will take a look for sure

Flag isn't "high desert". While it is drier than the coasts, they get regular monsoonal moisture in the summer and usually a couple large snow storms in the winter. Flag is one of the top 3 regions in the US for snowfall. I would suggest Cottonwood or Prescott if you are looking for more moderate climates.

The low-income housing in Flagstaff is called the City of Winslow. I can be on the first tee in Flagstaff in 45 minutes. My house cost approximately 25% of what an identical house would have cost in Flagstaff. But if you just love choking traffic and flannel-shirted posers, don't let me dissuade you. I don't know what your health problems are, but bear in mind Flag is at 7000 feet. I can't tell you how many people I've known who have attempted to live their Northern Arizona dream and been forced to leave after a few months for health reasons. Even Winslow is at 5100 feet, albeit much drier than Flag.

Truth in advertising: Winslow is a downtrodden dump - but by God it's a much lower-cost, friendlier and more "real" downtrodden dump than Flag.

The more I find about Flagstaff, the less I see that would be what I am looking for. I stayed in Paisley Oregon for 2 weeks. It's 4300 feet, but way, too, far from any larger city for me. So I started looking in AZ, and Texas. Also, NM. I'm looking for a similar area as Paisley Oregon, except it has to be near a larger city that has both a variety of shopping, and good medical facilities. I have a pacemaker, so have to have the medical to take care of that issue.

I realize that just because a place is 4300 feet it may be a lot different than Paisley. I'll put some info on that area below. Also, I think there is a lot of snow in Paisley winter's so really not sure I would have done well there year-round. I have allergies but they vanished for the 2 weeks. Lots of other reasons that may have happened. I do "feel" more comfy in a dryer climate, so the main thing will be to get away from the rain here, fog, sea-mist etc.

I'm probably dreaming of a place that doesn't exist, or it's no where close enough for me to get to

Thank you all for your input

Like another poster mentioned, check out Prescott and PV. Yavapai county will probably meet your needs.

I am also exploring drier climates due to severe mold allergies (I'm currently in the SE US).

Albuquerque has a very, very dry climate. I've heard that humidity is sometimes in the single digits.

I dropped the ball on this thread unfortunately, apologies to anyone who posted without getting a reply from me.

Now I am back to the areas talked about in this thread. In fact, I found I really like Cottonwood which was suggested to me in this thread, and thank you for the suggestion. I am applying to an apartment complex called Verde Valley Manor.

If anyone knows anything about this place, I would be so grateful to hear what you have to say. Anyone that lives there would be a God-sent to hear first-hand, or maybe a friend lives there or has.

Anyway, I hope posting will bring this up into view of anyone that is around, and would like to reply. There are many reasons I want to move and I'll just talk more about those if I get more replies here

Thanks much, Denise
