I was just reading a post on the Sedona BB on FB about rents in the area. New Apt complex is opening. $1500 for a 700 sq/ft apt! $1800 for 2bdrm. That is nuts!

Those are the designated 'affordable' apts.

First we need to add the cleaning fee, background and credit check fee, administrative fee and of course, at least one month security fee.

You know all those 'extra' charges on your phone, cable, power bill?

A dog may cost you another $100. a month.

We don't even want to imagine what an additional charge for another person in a one bedroom or another parking space might be. There are more extras.

It was only 3 or 4 years ago the same rentals were $700/800 a month.

Well, at least the restaurants haven't caught up.

My cheeseburger was only $15. yesterday. I got fries thrown in too.

agree with most of the posters here; Sedona is gorgeous, great place to visit, but the tourist infestation is unreal; think of Disney the week of Spring break, pre pandemic, and thats how Sedona is almost always, especially once things cool down a bit, and most certainly, on weekends/holiday, etc.

If you understand that, and are ok with that, then sure, try to find a place there, but as others have said, renting anything even semi affordable is virtually impossible, and unless you love crowds/tourist traps, or can afford multimillion dollar overpriced houses, you wont want to live there ..

Any time I think I might tolerate Sedona, I remember the hour I spent in traffic trying to get from Midgley Bridge to the 179 roundabout so I could GTFO (that's less than 2 miles for those not familiar with the area).

I used to have to go up there for work every few weeks a decade ago and it was enjoyable (and I'd pop up for fun on weekends in the late spring and fall). Now I detest the thought of going through there, be it for work or for fun. Which is a shame, because the area is beautiful and the drive up 89A can be quite enjoyable.

If you have money, you're free to do more or less whatever you want, but I sure as hell wouldn't spend my money on a place in Sedona - whether renting or buying. Plenty of other expensive, picturesque areas that have either fewer tourists or improved transit options to make life more relaxing.

The problem is Sedona/VOC is a very small buildable area. It is totally surrounded by the Coconino National Forest. No room for expansion so a waiting list if you will, as people come and go.

Of course, if you have the $$$, plenty of resort/hotel/motel accommodations are available. That's what this area is all about.

I hike almost every day on trails that you won't find on maps. No tourists. I love it.

There are also a vast amount of biking trails which you can hike on.

Hiking with busloads/carloads of tourists at Bell Rock should be just what you're looking for though. You may learn a foreign language too.
Ok, I think that is a fair response and we are starting to get into the meat of this.

True, I don’t want to hike with hundreds of other people, nobody does. I wasn’t aware that Sedona was that infested.

I also understand that this area of Arizona, north of Phoenix, is desirable, so the cost of living will be much higher. So even though I do have the money to spend on a rent of $3K or more per month, without working, I certainly don’t want to waste money either.

That’s the point of my post. To try to get opinions on where I might want to live while I do some great hikes everyday, not necessarily in solitude, but not in a sea of humanity either. Also, I don’t want to sit in total seclusion at home, like the Unabomber, since I live by myself. Surely, there is someplace that can encompass established hiking routes nearby, reasonably(although higher than Phoenix) priced housing and amenities, places reasonably nearby to shop and eat at. Is that too much to ask?

So if we are really talking about the Sedona area, and not Sedona itself, where are we talking about exactly?

So what places other than Sedona would you recommend for a guy like me?

You can hike it in less time using the Huckaby Trail or go along the path on the south edge of Oak Creek. I just hiked the path about a month ago. It's a beautiful route as long as you don't look north at the backside of downtown Sedona.

The beauty of living where I do in VOC is, I don't have to deal with tourist traffic or tourist hikers or even locals!

I'm a happy hiker

Here's how I got here when I was living back east.

Put an RV trailer on the back of my pickup and headed west with no particular destination.

Eventually got here, checked into the beautiful Rancho Sedona RV Park for a night and stayed for 6 months.

Went back east, said goodbye to everyone, left them all presents of everything I couldn't get in my pickup cap and here I am in The Village Of Oak Creek.

My point is, go stay somewhere for awhile. Coming, going and hanging around awhile should give you a feel if you belong there.

Not that it matters, but I give SedonaShadow a plus for this post. Get out an explore, if you have cash you can stay in hotels and such. Check out numerous areas in Northern AZ. There are still really cool places within an hour of so of Sedona so you can visit often when the tourist aren't overwhelming the place if you have your heart set on there if living in the city itself is not practical.

Have you considered Northern NM? Santa Fe and/or Taos might fit what you;re looking for.
