I am fixin on attending NAU starting this fall Semester, and would like to know some things about the area. I was up there for a campus tour last Monday, my first time during the daylight hours, and it is a pretty small populated "Town" for the recognition that it gets. I thought it was going to be much larger than it actually is.

What is the traffic like around there during the year in the Tourism off season?
How severe are the winters? I checked the city-data on it, but I would like to hear some words of wisdom from some residents.

The winters are usually 40-50f in the day with very cold temps at night. It snows a lot there something like 100in on average. There are usually 2-3 good storms a year that dump feet of snow and everything is slowed down for a while.

The main drag through town (Milton) can be pretty slow in the middle of the day and in "rush hours". Other than that, it's not bad.

Don't know if things have changes since I was young, but the Flagstaff cops had a reputation for being jerks.

It's like any other crummy Interstate crossroads, college town. Yes, it is physically small so the traffic can get hectic at times. Lots of places to shop and drink. Lots of snow in the winter since that's when the moisture shows up. It's filled with a bunch of whiney people who would love to leave but can't. I go up there once a year just to remind myself why I would never want to live there.

From my point of view Flagstaff is a small city. It looks big in comparison to my town, and I have to travel to Flagstaff for services.

Traffic is always miserable. There is no off season for tourism because when the summer ends people will come to see the fall colors of the aspen trees. Then they will be skiiing. Snow piles in the parking lots and takes up a substantial portion of the spaces. Don't expect a break here.

To like Flagstaff winters it is necessary to like cold weather. Some find it unbearable. If you can get past this the snow is powdery and not very wet, and quite easy to brush away. The sun comes out frequently making for blinding afternoons with warming trends.

NAU was a great experience regardless, but maybe not for everyone.

stay out of "Old Downtown ". if you need to shop , go to malls . the Old Downtown belongs to tourists . the streets run one way and are narrow . guv'mint offices are downtown an parking is at your own risk as there are no parking lots .
