Possibly moving to Flagstaff in a month or so. I have heard some good and bad and could use some advice. Would like to rent, but the housing seems kind of sparse. We have four kids and would like a good school and family friendly area. My husband during his job interview could smell something funny at night and worried about it being from manufacturing plants-anyone know anything?

Flagstaff is ok if you have the money to live here. The rents are enormously high for the wages that are paid. The odor that he probably smelled came from the Purina plant located on the east side of the city. Whenever they make a certain type of dog food you can definately tell. Overall the town is not too bad but definately make sure the job is going to last and is going to pay enough.

I would love to live in Flagstaff if I could.
I would suggest renting first, maybe a six-month lease (or less, if you can), so you can get to know the area and exactly where you'd like to live. If you find housing prices too high, Williams, Camp Verde and Winslow (one of the least expensive places to live in AZ, btw) are all places to think about, but know that it will be quite a commute for your husband if you were to go that route.

Also, to eat, go to this place: Brandy's Restaurant - Flagstaff, AZ
For fun, check this place out: Walnut Canyon National Monument, Flagstaff, Arizona

Too true...
Flagstaff reminds me of a quote I heard years ago about Durango.
"If you want to be a millionaire here, arrive with 2 million and don't plan on staying long."

Durango-Bayfield is WAAAAY nicer than Flagstaff. Cheaper housing once you get out of Durango city limits, and MUCH more money in Flagstaff-Pagosa Springs-Telluride than in Flagstaff itself.

As for the ODOR, it is from the Ralston-Nestle-Purina Pet Food Red-And-White-Checkerboard Plant. DO NOT live East of the tower, as the prevailing winds are westerly.
