We are thinking about taking our vacation this year somewhere on the Gulf Coast instead of SXM. What are the better beaches and is there an effect from the oil spill? Also, what areas have the best restaurants, etc. I have been to Lido Key during red tide so I don't want that. Also liked Siesta Key, but would like somewhere different. Have not been to Ft. Myers, Naples, Sanibel. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you should go as far south as possible, like Naples/Myers area. The projections show it missing this area.

Sanibel is beautiful and so is Naples. Thankfully our beaches here in Florida have not been subjected to the oil spill yet save for a small part of the western panhandle such as Pensacola. There is also the Atlantic beaches too!
I'm not sure if you know this but Florida doesn't allow Oil drilling off it's coast! We are the only Gulf state that has banned it.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I have been following the news, but not much has been said on our local news about the areas affected nor that Florida bans drilling.

I saw report that Florida officials are taking matters into their own hands to prevent coastal damage. I certainly hope they are successful. Florida may be our home.
