We are partially retiring and thinking of either the Deland or Citrus Co area. We spent a day in Deland and feel that Volusia Co may be a little more progressive and seems to have a little more 'center of gravity' via a downtown than any of the Citrus Co cities - though we like the laid back nature focus of Citrus.
Anyhow, I understand that the Deland area is pretty hectic around bike week and Daytona 500 (things of which we have no interest), but my question is whether Deland is fairly over run with bikers and road noise most other times? We love the natural spacious feel of the neighborhoods and the other nature oriented features of the area. Also, how is the downtown traffic most of the time? Thanks--

I've never had a problem with traffic in DeLand. It gets worse though the closer you get to Orange City, DeBary, and Deltona.

Race week doesn't really affect DeLand too much. You would want to avoid I-4 and 92 heading toward Daytona, but that's it.

I don't know about Bike Week.

We live in Daytona and my DH works in Deland. He has never had a problem with biker or race weeks traffic over there. The biggest problem for him is getting back into Daytona during those times after work. He has to find alternate routes. If you are in Deland you won't have a problem with either of those.

Showed properties all weekend while the Daytona 500 fans where in the area and had no problem what so ever, again avoid I-4 between Orlando and Daytona and Route 92 in the Daytona area.

As far as Bike Week again no problem as most cruise routes don't really go through Deland, but when they do they are very respectful.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the feedback folks. I was concerned because someone I know was down there a couple of years ago during bike week, and said that Deland was completely overun with bikers (and a 'rough crowd') etc.

They must have been confused. Like everyone else has mentioned, DeLand is hardly impacted by Bike Week at all.

As far as traffic in their beautiful Downtown, nothing to worry about. DeLand is one of Florida's hidden gems, imo.

Anyone know if ground has been broken for the Wal-Mart distribution center south of Crescent City? I'm considering a transfer, but can't find info on when it's to be completed.
