Hi all,

I recently relocated to Florida in September...from the Chicagoland area. I have applied like crazy to all types of jobs and only had 1 company call me for an interview but never called after that. I have over 10 years experience in customer service/call center, so this is surprising to me. I currently live in Orlando, near downtown and have lived in this area for almost 2 months. I was living in the Altamonte area but didn't like it, so moved to Orlando. I'm really surprised that jobs are so hard to come by here and after reading that Orlando is in the "Top 10 Worst Area For Jobs", I'm now extremely worried. Can anyone give me pointers as to what area in Florida is the best area for jobs?

Thanks

Research would/should have been #1 priority BEFORE you moved here. 2. You should have had a job lined up.... When people are on here and say it is really bad, we are not joking. It is really bad... My wife has 20+ years in retail, and has applied for 2 years. And she has been a FL resident for 11 years. Don't mean to be tough on you, but when I see posts like this I get irritated, and feel sorry for you, but FL is not the promise land in these times.

Keep going on Careerbuilder, monster, snagajob....

I appreciate your response and I did do research before moving here. I actually contacted recruiters from staffing agencies as well as recruiters for relocation and they assured me there were plenty of jobs in the Orlando region. I work from home part-time so I have a job, however I was hoping to find a job where I could supplement my income. My husband is unemployed and looking for work so I was also hoping for pointers for him. But again, thank you for your welcoming response; you shouldn't judge others just by what is posted. I didn't put my life story on here, just asked for ideas.

Well you didn't do enough research. Why would you listen to recruiters from staffing agencies?

The unemployment rate in FL just went up again. TX would have been a better choice. I don't understand anyone moving somewhere without a job unless they're retired or have extensive savings they don't mind draining.

Seain Dublin is right. In these economic times, research is not enough. You have found out that you must have a job sewn up tight before you move. There is no area in Florida I've heard of where there are alot of jobs. If you want to be a correctional officer, you can probably get hired or if you are a nurse, but there are even some hiring freezes in some of these fields. Good luck.

Well, YOU asked.... I NEVER judged you for anything. The reason there are so many angry, frustrated, people on City Data a lot of times is because they moved to FL and got completely screwed up because they figured, "Ah I will just move there, I will find something, FL is the land of opportunity, sunshine, and beaches". That is not the case... And I do not mean you did that, but we see it alot on here. People well established here in FL are having a terrible time with finding something. Sorry if you took it the wrong way, but...

Exactly. People seem to move to FL and Las Vegas and just think they will find a job. Check out the Las Vegas boards if you want to see maybe even a worse situation. That new hotel the Cosmopolitan opened up and they were having people go through 3 and 4 interviews to get a housekeeper''s position.

Orlando for some time has in been in the Top 10 worst job markets in the country, so it is not a big secret.

Places that have tourism as major industry are never places to move to in an economic downturn.

I wasn't trying to be cold or rude to this member, but it seems it looked that way. I wanted to be up front...

A friend of mine left LV and she told me it was incredibly bad there. Worse than here. But it seems FL and NV are worst off of all, maybe Detriot and other city areas are bad, but as a whole Fl is doing purdy bad.

Unemployment Rates for States

We made top 5.... On my way to #20 in June.

Listen jobs are difficult everywhere. I've been in FL as a whole for 3 years i came here last year from nj and got a job 2 weeks being here it all depends on what you think your worth. Nobody owes anyone a living. You can find a 8.00 dollar job which sucks but you know what better yourself with some school or get another job for 8 dollars that would be 16. Im tired of people saying FL is bad for jobs and schools are bad. They teach the same things up north in schools as they do here and jobs are just as hard here than anywhere else. We all have preferences and go on with our lifes as we do. But it seems more people wanna complain rather than actually doing somthin about it. Amiles keep looking change up your way of looking for jobs. Go drive around familiarize yourself with your area alot of jobs don't use monster or craigslist. There are signs everywhere for work just people think there worth more..
