Sales is an extremely challenging/difficult job in a good economy. There are ever-increasing sales goals you have to meet and if you don't, the company will hire someone else foolish enough to think it's attainable. Most companies hiring for sales positions currently offer a very low base salary and it's up to you make up the difference. Many of these companies flood the market with sales staff so you're fighting for a sale against a disproportionate number of others. Both examples just mentioned usually apply to the insurance companies that say they're "currently hiring". If I were selling anything right now on a commission basis I think perhaps cars would be the best option. I would steer clear of the mass producers like Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge/Chrysler and those dealers with the frequent screaming ads on TV. 60 hour weeks are the norm and humiliation tactics common by sales managers to weed out "underperformers". A friend of mine sells cars and says he would never work for anyone but Subaru (current), VW, Acura, Lexus, BMW, Volvo, etc. because of less-game playing by the dealer and the loyal customer base that isn't looking for the deal of the century. Good luck!

The money, coders tell me, is more than decent. But it's a CONSISTENT decent with benefits.
