Hi all, Ive seen a job posting at the VA clinic in The Villages, Fl that I am thinking about applying for. Doing some reading though, I see that The Villages is some kind of planned retirement community and that only people 55+ can live there? Bit of a problem for me considering I'm only 34. So where would be the closest decent place to live? How is the cost of living in that area? I'm assuming its high in The Vilages itself but again I dont think I will be living there. Thanks!

The Villages is a retirement community, approaching 100,000 people. It is near Ocala and you might learn more from people in the Villages/Ocala in the Ocala section. Ocala has its pros and cons. The VA clinic there is new and I think you would like working there. I do know a social worker who lived in Gainesville and worked at the VA clinic in the Villages for a while, but I would not recommend it, assuming you plan to remain at that clinic.

The villages is like its own city with over thousands and thousands of old people, most ex northerners. My grand parents live there and I would never want to live there. I can't stand the rudeness and idiocy of the old people. It was built in the middle of small red neck/trashy towns so unless your old or trashy you won't fit in.

The Villages is the largest retirement community in the US. There are some homes just outside The Villages that are not 55+ so you could live near by and go to all the grocery stores, shops in and around The Villages.

If you are married, have kids, church orient, not looking for nightlife, I think someone can live fine in all these small towns near the Villages (I couldn't live in Wildwood, Leesburg or Ocala, too small nothing there for me and not enough culture). Even Ocala is a small town (it has grown the last 15 years) in lots of ways . I know young people that live in Ocala and love it, so its all relative. I will say that when I was in The Villages last December there were a bunch or bartenders that worked there that were in their 20s, so who knows where they live. I would plan a trip and do the drive to the Villages from Ocala and maybe from Northern Orlando and you will see it is in the middle of no where all by itself (it does have just about everything that a 55+ community would need).
