As someone enrolled in FRS, that sounds like it's a fair plan, though of course I'm not thrilled with the pay cut. I would like a clarification on those of us who have more than 6 but less than 10 years of service- does that mean we're no longer vested?

i pay 6-7% towards my retirement in Texas as a teacher BUT they don't make us pay into social security and the payout is MUCH better. and Texas isn't exactly known for being teacher friendly....Has anyone done a comparison with other states? If texas is doing much better for it's teachers retirement than Florida I would venture a guess that Florida is one of the worst...i am guessing right down there with southern states such as mississippi and other bottom of the pack performers...Is this what Florida teachers get for achieving 5th rank status in the US?

I think that sounds fair, too. I have a problem with salary cuts for teachers because Florida teachers are already poorly paid, but no problem with paying into a pension plan.

I'd also be interested in seeing a comparison to other states.

looking for some comparison stuff now...found this: http://www.nasra.org/resources/Publi...heet110125.pdf

its just a general info sheet...

so far it seems that teachers in PA get 87.5% of their salary after 30 years! that is really generous

The Economic Value of Higher Teacher Quality
Eric A. Hanushek
NBER Working Paper No. 16606
Issued in December 2010
NBER Program(s): ED LS PE
Most analyses of teacher quality end without any assessment of the economic value of altered teacher quality. This paper combines information about teacher effectiveness with the economic impact of higher achievement. It begins with an overview of what is known about the relationship between teacher quality and student achievement. This provides the basis for consideration of the derived demand for teachers that comes from their impact on economic outcomes. Alternative valuation methods are based on the impact of increased achievement on individual earnings and on the impact of low teacher effectiveness on economic growth through aggregate achievement. A teacher one standard deviation above the mean effectiveness annually generates marginal gains of over $400,000 in present value of student future earnings with a class size of 20 and proportionately higher with larger class sizes. Alternatively, replacing the bottom 5-8 percent of teachers with average teachers could move the U.S. near the top of international math and science rankings with a present value of $100 trillion.
