I'm looking at a prospective job in Gainesville, but am a very outdoors type person. I've read in other threads that there isn't much to do around Gainesville. However, it seems there are many lakes nearby and beaches are about 1.5 hours away. What have you all experienced?

Thank you!

What kind of outdoorsy stuff are you looking for? Biking, scuba diving & hiking or hunting & fishing? Either way, you've got plenty to do.

The Gainesville Way of Life is...

Ichetucknee River and Ichetucknee Springs - Tubing, Camping, Swimming, and More

Welcome to Florida State Parks

There are tons of outdoor activities here. If you like biking there are some great trails:

Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail | Hawthorne Florida Rails-To-Trails | Trails.com

The springs (like multiple springs) are just minutes away.

There is Devil's Millhopper Welcome to Florida State Parks which is fun to see.

Payne's prairie is great too.

Beaches just an hours drive away or so.

It's a pretty outdoorsy place for much of the year. Lots of places to ride bikes, look at birds, play tennis, run, golf, springs ... There's actually more outside than inside for adults who aren't drawn to bars, chain restaurants and the mall.

I would suggest checking out www.meetup.com. If you look for "adventure" in Gainesville, you will find several groups. It is a nice social outlet for people who like kayaking, hiking, biking, etc.

There are lots of people on the forum who like to rag on Gainesville. We suspect they have ties to FSU.

Wow. Don't even know how you came to such thoughts, being that Gainesville is at the epicenter of FL outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, biking, camping, boating, swimming, etc. and offers numerous local clubs to pursue these interests, access to nearby State/National Parks which offer unexpected opportunities such as Natural Springs, caving and horse back riding. (People from the rest of FL drive hours to experience these opportunities in this area).

And as also noticed, Gainesville has the choice of Cedar Key on the Gulf or St Augustine Beach on the Atlantic areas for beach fun.

Here is a link to a recent post regarding Trails/Parks that all links would be relative to the Gainesville area as you can customize them:
//www.city-data.com/forum/flori...l#post18382964

You can do additional searches for local outdoor clubs that suit your interest.

Here are links to some other sites which may be of interest:
Florida Scenic Highways (lists recreational opportunities by area)

Gainesville Critical Mass (local chapter of radical int'l cycling club):

Good Luck (and have fun)!

There is no beach at Cedar Key. It's swampy, and great for fishing or kayaking, but there is no beach.

Its so tiny you must have missed it, its about 50ft at the southern end of town. at 55 miles from Gainesville you may as well drive to the east coast for beaches..
Real beaches would be the Daytona or St Augustine area some 80 miles to the east or the Clearwater area 150 miles to the south..
beach at Cedar Key in its entirety ,may have been high tide when you viewed it McDrew

Unfortunately unsuspecting visitors to the site have to endure these visits from such god awful people.

If you love being outdoors, have a little southern pride, love the heat. and are a Gators fan. then welcome to North Florida.

But Really all of Florida is Great except the Panhandle...unless you like old people, hurricanes, oil spills, and colleges with poor education and values for your kids future.
