Hello! I just found this forum and I'm so glad I did! My husband is about to be re-located to Homestead, FL and we are going down to look at real estate in the area. Someone recommended Cutler Cay in Cutler Ridge to us. Can anyone tell me anything about the area? I have done some on-line research but the posts here seem to be a lot more informative and personal. We're leaving next week to "explore" the areas and meet with real estate broker etc. I'm quite nervous - I've lived in NY my whole life so this is big for us
I would be grateful for any information and opinions you can give me on the above areas, where to live, not to live, schools etc... Thanks in advance!

Cutler Cay is a new walled in community of McMansions on Old Cutler Road. It's between Saga Bay and the old Burger King headquarters, between Old Cutler Rd. and Biscayne Bay. I think prices around $600K-1 million. No Bay access, as it's protected mangrove marshland that's part of Biscayne National Park. The immediate area is very upscale, though go about 3 miles to the south or west and it gets rough. I drive by it frequently--it looks very nice. Cutler Ridge is to the southwest, homes are much more modest, are mostly smaller 1950's homes, about $300K, OK area. Both are about a 5-10 minute drive to the base. No nearby beaches, but Black Point Marina is nearby for boaters and fishing.

Default Cutler Ridge

Moved there from upstate NY 30 yrs. ago as a young child. Lived in Saga Bay (down Old Cutler Rd. (south) from where you're talking about Cutler Cay). Lost house to hurricane Andrew 13 ft. tidal surge over house, that we had owned for 9 mos. Rebuilding was worse than hurricane; Dade county bureaucracy is unbelieveable. It was a nice area, but I have no use for Dade county at all. Moved to central FL 7 yrs. ago and got my kids thru school here. Best move I ever made, except for the next one I'm trying to make to TN. Be careful of elevation of houses being constructed. THat's what caused most of my problems.......house was built in the 70's below the proper elevation, due to corruption between developer and county. Black Point marina used to have a nice restaurant, and was a family outing on Fri. night to let kids look for manatees. Crime, traffic, rude people... Sorry, you have to go to Miami..
