Many Floridians are from somewhere else. Only 33 percent of the state is native-born, according to the 2005 American Community Survey part of the U.S. census. Our identity is shaped by out-of-state residents, and in Central Florida, it is even more pronounced.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Metro Orlando -- Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties -- grew by 53,376 residents from July 1, 2005, to July 1, 2006. [b] Fifty-six percent of that growth was because of transplants -- people from other states. /B] Eighteen percent of new Central Floridians came from outside the United States, and 26 percent were native Floridians.

The result is that Florida becomes what they -- the newcomers -- want it to be.

"Florida is a place where people have projected their own dreams and agenda onto the state.

Expensive homes, low income, high cost of living, rude people, psychotic traffic, snobs, the haves and the have nots, no middle class, a total rat race.

Of course, my only "Florida" opinion comes from Naples. I'm sure there are still decent places - I've just not been to any.

Unless you count Key West - then I think of the sunset celebration, wide front porches of old Victorian mansions all set for breakfast, warm ocean breezes, gorgeous coral reefs, friendly people in a very laid back town.

I so want to go on vacation!!

I can't speak to the Central and Northern areas as I moved to Broward about 7 years ago. I have to say that there is no one answer to that question. I find Floridians to be niches within niches and disparate groups in a hodge podge mish mash mix that has no cohesive experience. It may not be all that bad if you know how to deal with it and some folks even enjoy it.

I live with many natives actually most are native so when I hear floridians I think of my neighbours

they are friendly but weary of outsiders
they are mannered and polite
hard working
love to play,i.e. fishing and hunting
the good ole boys of the old south is what they are really
they hate general sherman and don't like yankees

joking well actually they really do hate general sherman

When I think of Floridians, I think of the non-native Floridans that are moving into my area because they think it is cheap, and rudely trying to change the place, like they did to Florida.

When I think of native-Floridians, I think of lovely people that have been overrun by outsiders.

And then I think of the people that overran my little town in Massachusetts.

Then I realize that they are really just yuppies. Classless, rude yuppies that are looking for the next get-quick-rich scheme. Walmart shoppers that want to save a buck, pave over paradise and worry about themselves, without regard for their neighbors or the long-term effect of their actions.

When I think of Floridians, I guess I am really thinking of the selfish baby boomers. I guess I am not really thinking of real Floridans, at all.
