Hi y'all, I was thinking about relocating to Flagler Beach in the future and was just wondering what the cost of living is like in that area. I'm looking for a small beach community to move to where I can just work hard and play hard year round. I've heard that area has a laid back and slower pace of life compared to many other parts of Florida and that's what I'm looking for. Any responses on Flagler Beach and county would be appreciated. I lived in Flagler beach in the early 70's when i was doing construction on a school in Bunnel,
Always loved Flagler as a quaint little seaside town where most everyone was familiar with each other and most people hung out either at the pier, on the beach or at the only bar in town, however that small town feel is fast disappearing as the urban sprawl connected with Daytona is fast taking over the area, the beach is still beautiful and you can walk for miles on it,the pier is still a great place to fish or just hang out and the restaurant on the pier was serving great food when i was there last 2 years ago. Flagler Beach is a great little old FL style beach town definitely laid back and slower pace. We go there often to eat at restaurants with a view of the ocean. No condo's here blocking the beach view! If you can find a job there are homes and apt rentals all around. Palm Coast is nearby with plenty of rentals also. Jobs is the biggest challenge with many going towards Ormond/Daytona & St. Aug for jobs. Very limited employment in Flagler Beach unless you work at a restaurant, at least that I am aware of.

My wife and I are teachers, so in a few years after Florida's economy turns around and the state needs more teachers we will start looking. If we couldn't get jobs in Flagler Beach, we could look in surrounding communities. Sometimes it is better to not teach in the community you live.

Flagler Beach is a neat little town and Flagler County is very affordable, but unemployment is high and with the new budget cuts in education, finding a teaching job may be tough.

Urban sprawl has not, and really can't affect Flagler Beach. It's basically part of a barrier island with mostly single family homes, so there's really nowhere to build. One condo is a high-rise. After that was built, they imposed a moratorium. There is a 3-story limit.

Old King's Elementary is technically in Flagler Beach city limits, but it's on the mainland, a couple of miles from Flagler Beach. With the exception of Old King's and Bunnell Elementary, all the schools are in Palm Coast.

The counties directly north and south of Flagler are St. John's and Volusia. 30 to 45 minute commute, depending. They both have community colleges and some prestigious universities.
