"I don't think the laws are too easy at all. The system is designed to not punish people who are suspended for monetary reasons," Gottlieb said. "You take the license, it puts people out of work, then they can't support their family or pay the money they owe. It becomes the equivalent of a state-sponsored debtors' prison."

Thank God and the car & oil companies that we have no serious public transportation policy in Florida and in most of the rest of the country, right?

I have a stupid idea. Now that the housing boom and many of the construction jobs that came with it are coming to an end, and now that the US budget is busted by foreign oil wars, and oil resources are depleting relative to global demand anyway, why don't we put these people, returning soldiers, and the money saved to work building a serious public transportation infrastructure and vehicles energized by other than petroleum resources?

Nah, too stupid to even contemplate.

Easy solution. All cars should have a swipe card-reader hooked up to a wireless device connected to a central database that makes sure your license, tag, insurance, etc. is current. Put your key in the ignition, swipe your license, then turn on your car. If you are "ok", the engine will start. If you are an idiot, your car will simply explode....

well, ok, maybe just not start.

Putting people in jail just because they didn't pay a parking ticket or if their insurance company goofs up is much worse. If you are going to punish people you need to differentiate between willful reckless driving and clerical errors. I am happy that they are not arresting people for a suspended license. In Florida they suspend your license for anything.

In Manatee county, shooting is legal but driving on a suspended will get you 11 months and 31 days at the port. Go figure?

Too funny, Pritchard, unfortunately the system won't allow me to add to your rep, but thanks for the chuckle!
