We do want to do a bit of surfing/boogie boarding, so the Atlantic side of Florida seems appealing, am I incorrect?
If surfing is really important to you then you probably want the Atlantic side. There are surfers in the Gulf but there is very little wave action in the Gulf compared to the Atlantic. Some days there are waves, depending on storms out at sea, but most days the Gulf is as glassy as a big lake. From what I understand, surfing is really popular along Volusia County, Brevard County, Indian River County, and St. Lucie County.

Sebastian inlet is considered one of the best surfing spots along the eastcoast.

Thanks for all of the info and opinions. Everyone has been so helpful.
And the winner is.......Melbourne and surrounding coastal area, my husband could do maybe a half hour commute to Melbourne, something like that.
Now I need help finding a good neighborhood. We do want to live in a nice safe neighborhood close to the beach and maybe some shopping/restaurants. We figure we can go up to around the 1500.00-1800.00/mo mark on rent. We also need a townhouse/house or something with a yard for our 3 year old. Is this realistic with the amount we want to pay for rent? If anyone could give me some hints as to the best neighborhoods in the area that would be great.
Thanks everyone

Default sarasota

Hi! I think the best part of the state is the west coast of florida. Tampa is a big city if you want to live in a larger area. Sarasota/Bradenton are smaller, but the beaches are absolutely gorgeous!

Look for a short term rental, there are plenty of them available, even beachside. Get to know your preferences, and zero in on the right place. I have lived in the Melbourne Beach area for 18 years (former FT Lauderdale, former N.J) it is a wonderful place, particularly to raise a family. Though written for retiree audience, check out this article:U.S. News & World Report: Retirement Guide 2007 about Melbourne Beach. Though home prices are not cheap, rents are in your ballpark. If you do not mind being west of I-95 a section called VIERA is the up coming place to be in Brevard County. Very family oriented with all of the amenities one could ask for. Approx 20 minute drive to the beach near Patrick Air Force Base (Satellite Beach).

Default If you could live anywhere in florida - same question!

I would like to move back to Florida in Late January/early February. I am a single woman in my 40's,and don't want to move to too much of a sleepy town. I am self-employed, and would like to live close to the beach, so inland is out.

Oh, I'm a renter, and have looked at rentals and they aren't that much more than the insane rent from Boulder, Colorado from where I am coming from for a two-bedroom/

Ideas, thoughts, feedback?

Thanks muchly!

Thanks again everyone!
So far the top of the list includes Melbourne, Jupiter/PB, and the Keys(dreamin of course on the Keys, maybe some day)
Need more info on Destin, but it seems lots of folks like it.
Peace everybody
Hi, if you're looking at Melbourne/Space Coast area, please look at the city of Viera (www.viera.com). We are headed there in under 2 years and have done a lot of research. Great shopping, schools, parks, walking trails, etc. Good Luck!

Thanks for the hint on Viera, I checked it out. It seems like we could get a nice three bedroom house in Viera for under 2000.00 a month. I've been looking on line for housing in Brevard County and it seems like we could be close to the beach in a nice house for around this price. is this normal or realistic? I'm just shocked at the low rent near the beach and am having a hard time believing that we can live so close to the beach in a nice, safe neighborhood for so little.
Thanks again everybody
