A family member is asking me (I live in North Fla.) whether he and his wife and two small dogs should rent a condo on the east coast, maybe around Vero Beach, or on the Gulf coast for three weeks in February.

They have spent February on the Gulf coast for two consecutive years now, and they like it very much, but they're thinking of changing directions this year, just to try something different.

Neither they nor I know anything about the Vero Beach area, or any other area on the east coast north of Palm Beach County, for that matter. I know Palm Beach and parts south, and I know they wouldn't like that at all, because of the over-development, high traffic, etc.

Any suggestions for areas on the east coast that are as nice as Naples or other similar Gulf coast areas?

Anyplace similar to Naples on the Atlantic side is going to be south of Palm Beach which you've lumped together as one place. It's actually not all alike and would recommend taking a look at Hollywood Beach. It's a much quieter area than other SE Florida cities yet is convenient to both Fort Lauderdale and Miami which provide much to do and see, unless they favor an early to bed early to rise lifestyle and limited interaction with society. If that's the case pretty much anywhere north of Jupiter (except for Jacksonville or Daytona) will fulfill that.

Comparing Gulf Coast and Atlantic Coast is like comparing apples to oranges. Feb will be a cool month probably anywhere on the East Coast North of say Jupiter. Water temps will be in the low 60s and maybe down in the 50s. We may have some waves and you might get to see some good surfing. If you must compare with Naples, I am thinking Vero Beach is kind of an upper class small town, too. There are some nice beaches there.(doesn't have white sands like the Gulf beaches but still beautiful)There is a Disney resort close by. Sebastian Inlet State Park is close and is beautiful relaxing spot to visit, fish, watch surfers, etc. .
Feb. in this area also has some great festivals-like the Grant SeaFood Festival. It also isn't a long drive to visit places North or South. A1A can be a fun trip either direction to see some beautiful ocean front homes. Kennedy Space Center is just up the road. If they are into Nascar or even Indy racing....Daytona 500 is in Feb. and the 24 hour race is at Daytona just before Nascar Race week gets under way. Daytona is a daytrip for sure. I think they would also love the Ponce Inlet lighthouse and the beach up there. There is a lot to do on this side of the state or you can just enjoy the pool etc. .

I'd choose the Atlantic side. Water will probably be a bit warmer, though not much, and so will the weather.
