Precor is a good brand. With any treadmill, try to get in an incline of some sort throughout the workout.

Another great machine is an eliptical [the ones that you actually have to use your legs] & doesn't put so much impact on the shins & ankles.

If I could, I'd be out in the early am to get in a walk or run; that is my favorite time regardless of where I am living or what season.

I have two. One is a Vita-master and I have no idea how old it is, I bought it from a gym that was closing years ago. It must be like 40 or 50 years old industrial strength. The other one is a modern one that folds up. It is a Pro-Form, I think they sell them at sears. It does everything, goes fast slow up down it runs you through one of a number of workout programs you can select. Or you can just set a speed and walk. You can even download more programs from the net.

Heres the best part, it cost new like $700.+, but I got it at a garage sale for $75.00. (like new). People buy these things and never use them, you can get great deals on them once they get tired of looking at it. You just want one that is pretty heavy duty and goes fast enough to run. Not that you will do anything more then walking but it is nice if you can.

I often see these people pounding their way down the sidewalk in he hot sun and think they must be crazy. Although it seems like Florida is an outdoor place, I'm not so sure. How do most of you stay in shape down here? I bike ride some mostly early and in the evening. I run, (treadmill) hit the heave bag and speed bag plus some light weight lifting. My wife does Yoga but I never got into it. Actually Florida didn't do that bad, I think it was like 34 on the fat list, thats pretty good.

Report says 23 percent of Florida's adults are obese -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

Presently, I am on an one week reprieve. I got a new tattoo, my first, and I have to avoid activity, like exercising.

I was sitting at 248, but I am down to 213. I know that taking the week off may not be good, but I know that 7 days will not make that much of a difference. I start my workout again on Saturday.

I have been on the eliptical, but now I do about 50 minutes on the treadmill which is about 4.25-4.50 miles per workout. I think that is good, considering I am on there for about 30 miles a week. In a month, I am on the treadmile for 120 miles a month.

I am not fit enough to run a marathon, but hey, I think I am doing well and to lose 30-35 pounds in 4 months, you can not really ask for anything more than that.

Wow, that is really great, keep it up. You are adding not only years to your life but quality. What is the tattoo by the way?

i always found it ironic how most of the people in "oh so beautiful climate" florida never walk anywhere! yet in most of the colder states people are out and about.

alot of areas dont even have sidewalks here.

sprawl is bad for your health.

Here in Lakeland, tons of people are out walking, jogging, biking and skating every day - most can be seen going around Lake Hollingsworth which is the main lake in Lakeland. It has a wonderful 3 mile path around the entire lake and it is gorgeous. It's so nice to see so many people out both day and night.

As a bonus, there always seems to be a cool breeze right at the lake.

Obviously, if you're in ill health, you shouldn't be out in this kind of heat and humidity.

Everybody else is a bunch of "Weenies!" I'm a 53 year-old woman and the only exercise I do in AC is pilates at the gym or my Soloflex Rockit at home (and that's not usually in AC... I turn it off every morning and open the windows.) My block has 12 lots and I mow, edge & weed-whack 9 of them. I ride my bike all over the neighborhood.

Why do people move to Florida & then want to AC their lives?

When it comes to exercise it is in most cases healthier in a controlled environment. Running down the road breathing car fumes and sweating like crazy is not that good. You can develop hyperthermia as well as deplete your body of electrolytes even suffer heart failure. It happens to high school football players as well as pro players down here every year. Much less some over weight guy trying to lose a few pounds pounding up and down the sidewalk in front of his house. I would not call your advice very sound. It's not a macho thing just common sense, It gets hot down here.
