I am moving to Pensacola next month. We are renting a truck and moving everything ourselves. I need help deciding what size truck to rent. Here's what I have to move:
2 queen matress and box springs sets
1 bedroom suite (includes 5 drawer tall dresser, 6 drawer wide dresser, 2 nightstands, small vanity, sleigh bed frame)
Leather couch and recliner
Dining room table with 4 chairs and matching buffet
Large armoir (about size of refridgerator)
Futon
Nightstand
Desk with chair
And, of course, boxes of clothes, dishes, etc.
We will also be towing a car behind the truck, so I plan on cramming it full of stuff as well.
I have never moved this much furniture before and don't know what size truck to rent. Has anyone else moved alot and has experience with this? Should I go with the 16 or 24 ft truck? Any advice?

Go with the 24 ft truck. When I moved myself, I always underestimated the amount of junk we had and wound up wishing I had gotten a larger truck. That room size estimate on U-Haul's site is conservative. They are only considering the standard furniture that goes into the rooms, not the stuff that goes in or on or around that furniture. Be on the safe side and go with the larger truck.

I live on the panhandle. Pensacola is not a bad place to live. Why are you moving there, if I may ask?

Thanks so much for the advice. I inherited my father's house there in 2004. My sister and I have been renting it out until now. I just finished nursing school and am able to move there. No real reason in particular, other than free rent. I want to work alot and save up money to but my own house. I don't know if it will be in FL or TN (where I live now). All of my family is here so probably in TN. I visited Pensacola alot before my dad passed away and really liked the area. I am SO nervous though, moving that far away from home without knowing anyone. My boyfriend of 9 years is coming too, but he doesn't know anyone either. I figure it will be a good life experience.
What part of the panhandle are you on? How's the job market? I'm an RN so I'm not too worried. My boyfriend does heating and air, mainly new residential installations. There is tons of housing being built in our area, so his work is more than steady. Is there much building going on in that area?

At the moment, I live in the Fort Walton Beach area. It's about 50 miles east of P'cola. I used to live in Navarre which is about 20 miles from P'cola so we used to spend a lot of time over there.

There is not much new construction going on right now. There was quite a bit until about a year ago but the real estate market is pretty sluggish here right now. I would think he should be able to find a job here. A/C is a necessity in FL so companies are always hiring. We just had a complete new HVAC and exterior unit installed back in June so there are opportunities for new installation even in existing housing.

As an RN, you should have no trouble finding a job. Baptist Hospital and Sacred Heart Medical Center are in P'cola and they are two of the top ranked employers in the country. Sacred Heart in particular has a huge compound in the Brent area of town.

The cost of living is pretty low in Pensacola. You won't have a mortgage but you should consider homeowners insurance. It's not required if you own the house outright but it wouldn't be a bad idea to get it anyway. Pensacola took a lot of damage from hurricane Ivan in 2004. They still haven't finished rebuilding some areas. Dennis and Katrina did a bit of damage in 2005. Of course you will have to pay property taxes but there is no state income tax in FL.

The beaches are beautiful in this part of the state. They look more like the beaches in the Caribbean. Pensacola Beach is actually a few miles out of town in Gulf Breeze.

I wouldn't think it would be hard for a young couple to meet people. People around here are generally pretty friendly. There are some clubs and restaurants with live music and bars. You would meet a lot of people working in a hospital too. The panhandle is very right wing conservative but P'cola is a bit more liberal and diverse than other places in the area. It might be because there is a university there. There are clubs and coffee houses and a lot of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, boating, fishing, hunting, camping, etc. I don't know what part of TN you are from but it only takes 7 or 8 hours to get back there for a visit.

Thanks! I have actually been to Fort Walton, Gulf Breeze, and Navarre. They are all beautiful beaches. I like to explore new places. Really, I tend to get lost and stumble upon them. We do have homeowner's insurance. Thankfully, because we had alot of trees come down with Dennis and needed a new roof after Katrina. I live about 30 miles south of Nashville, and it takes about 6.5 hours to get to Pensacola. Thanks for all your insight into the area. It's nice to hear from a local.

Definitely get the bigger truck. I've moved many times before settling in Ocala, FL and I always seemed to need more space than I thought. All those things in the garage, basement, or other friend's place that you want to take with you will need a space. THe smaller trucks get filled quickly. As for driving each of them, there is little difference. Once you go the first 50 miles or so you will have the feel of it no matter which size you have.

As for Florida, you will enjoy Pensacola. It is a nice sized city and it is in Florida. It will take you one whole summer to get used to the heat, but once you do, you will love it. Have a safe trip.

I did decide to rent the bigger truck. I am glad I did too. This afternoon, we found out we're getting back a bedroom suite we had loaned to a family member (about 2 years ago and we didn't think we'd ever see it again). We will definitely need the room now. Thanks for everyone's advice.
As for the heat, we have been breaking records here in TN for the high temps. We went 20 days I believe with the daily highs being over 100. Schools have been closed or let out early and sports practices have to be held inside. I can handle the heat, I just hope it's not any worse there than here.

Nope, haven't EVER heard of that here.. guess the nice cool breezes from the vast Gulf of Mexico protect us from that sort of thing.

These are the days, when this area SHINES.
