Also, Gainesville is going through some big changes as far as the economy goes. Innovation square is starting to get up and going and it will bring a lot of jobs to the city.

Innovation Square
Basically he's been back for 3/4 sports events in the last 20 years per his posts.

The reason I like Gainesville is because it doesn't attract some of the types posting in this thread. Gainesville is a great town. I have no ties to UF(school in Miami) and I moved here from Chicago. To appreciate Gainesville, you need to get off your ass and explore. There's lots to do especially if you are the outdoors type. Gainesville is a very educated city. No ugly gift shops, no theme parks, and it has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state. East Gainesville is much safer then most "ghetto areas" in other cities. Schools are good. I have four small children and Gainesville is just the place for them. Gainesville has it's faults but being unoriginal is not one of them.

Yes, many of the better areas are outside the city limits. They are, though, inside the urban boundary and thus are a part of "Gainesville." There's been ongoing talk as well of merging the city and county, like with Jacksonville. If you want to avoid the college crowdedness, you need to be at least a mile and a half or so, in any direction, away from campus.

StJohnCane,

I've lived in Chicago for a long time before moving to Sarasota. I don't have any kids, just myself trying to finish up school. I would love to hear your side of the story, since you've moved to Gainesville from Chicago. I haven't visited Gainesville yet, but will be sometime soon. What are your thoughts? Please feel free to get detailed. Thank you!

Floridaherbgirl, was the message above for me? If so, no, I haven't made it to Gainesville yet, but I'm expected there on July 13 for student preview, mandatory. I'm hoping to get there sooner and check out the rental scene a bit.

Are you heading that way? What is your situation like and where are you at the moment, if you don't mind me asking? I'm happy to share any info I have on hand so far, just ask. Keep me posted!

We didn't like Gainesville when we went to school there, but nearly moved back after having a baby. Funny how priorities change.. . It is a great place to raise a family, lots of amenities for a small city, good schools, and low crime. Trust me, after spending three years in Columbia SC, Gainsville looks like heaven.

Looking to move to Gainsville in July 2013. My daughter is 17 and will be attending a community college for her first year of college. My husband will most likely tranfer with the company he works for now in VA. I clean houses. We def dont want to be in the mix of a bunch of college students. Where in Gainsville would be a goos place to search for house rentals in a more laid back quiet neighborhood?
