A lot of people who are interested in moving to Florida are concerned about good school districts. It made me curious about what the rankings were for the entire state. A few days ago I asked my daughter's teacher if she had the list and this is what she sent home today.

The rankings are determined by the percentage of A schools, the percentage of students meeting the state's highest standard for reading ability, reading comprehension, writing, math, and science, and the overall FCAT scores. Apparently they are changing the grading criteria for this school year and making it more difficult so next year's list may look a lot different.

This list is for the 2006-07 school year. The number is the rank, the name is the county, the letter is the overall grade given to the school district.

Funny how the "redneck riviera" is always near the top of that list. I guess the teachers are doing something right even if it is only teaching the FCAT areas. I know the OWC local community college graduates the most AA associates degrees in the state as well. Hopefully these students continue on to FSU or other schools as well.

Numbers 1, 6, 16 are all located next to each other up here in the panhandle. We cant be to backwards then.

A much larger percentage of the population is military in 1, 6, 16, and that definitely influences higher scores. I'm a product of Okaloosa county schools, and honestly, I'm stunned it was the top of the list. I thought it was a decent education, but I'd only consider the middle/high schools up there 'good' after working with a few schools in Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. At any rate, something is flawed to be giving Orange county a B.. it's one of the worst run counties in the state, and that's coming from the teachers who have had experience elsewhere in Florida.

Then again.. perhaps they're factoring the state standards too much in this formula.
"The rankings are determined by the percentage of A schools, the percentage of students meeting the state's highest standard for reading ability, reading comprehension, writing, math, and science, and the overall FCAT scores."
