Does Florida have an intangibles tax? If so, what is considered taxable? There is no state tax, but probably a lot of other taxes for the state to generate revenue. I went to a link for Florida taxes that mentioned the intangibles tax but provided no details.

Not really sure what that means. Besides for property taxes and sales taxes I am not aware of other taxes the private person needs to pay to Florida. One of the main reasons for no income tax is revenue from tourist and tax dollars from them.

Here is the state website for the Florida Department of Revenue:
FL Dept Rev - General Tax Administration

I think much of the intangible tax was repealed a few years back but there are still some things that are taxed. You should be able to find info at this website.

Thanks for the tax link. Here is what is stated:

"Florida does not impose personal income, inheritance, gift taxes or intangible personal property taxes. However, there are other taxes and fees that, in certain counties or circumstances, Florida residents may be required to pay, such as: convention development tax, local option tourist tax, fuel taxes, communications services tax, gross receipts tax, lead-acid battery fee,
new tire fee, motor vehicle fee (Lemon Law), or rental car surcharge."

I'm not sure what all or any of these might amount to for an average retiree living in Florida, and there are things I've never heard of. But states without income taxes get their revenue in other ways.

Every state has fuel taxes, but beyond a sales tax, I've never hears of new tire fees or a specific motor vehicle fee for a Lemon Law. At any rate, the intangibles tax has been repealed, which I believe was a tax on investments.

Taxes by State: Alabama to Iowa

It appears from the retirement living link that there is a "personal property" tax, which is different from property taxes. I wonder if this is a tax on the value of your car, boat, etc. I could not find more details.

Thanks again bbronson.

FL does charge you tax on those things when you first buy them, but unlike some states, particularly in the northeast and midwest, FL does NOT charge you a "property tax" on the value of your car/boat/motorcycle each year.
