We currently reside in southern New Jersey, but are really Southerners at heart. We're looking to move to Destin. Our 8 year old daughter goes to a public school with a rating of 9-10 and we're hoping that what we've read about the Destin school systems is true.

Also, I assume that since there are a few schools to choose from, there are alot of full time residents with children. Can anyone suggest any established family neighborhoods?

We really need to get out of this hell hole!!!

Thanks for any suggestions

I would post in the Pensacola forum for best results.

Also FYI there are other school districts as highly rated as Destin that are on the coast. Check Out St. John's County (the north end) which is just south of Jacksonville and includes Ponte Vedra, Ponte Vedra Beach and the planned communities of Julington Creek, World Golf Village and Nocatee. Additionally Brevard County (east of Orlando) has several areas with similarly highly rated schools with Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach, Melbourne Beach, Indialantic, Indian Harbour Beach and the large planned community of Viera as the ones to check out.

What area in South Jersey? You may find it no better in Destin except for weather. I'd do a lot of research.

To find year-round residents in Destin, you want to be north of US 98. South of 98 is largely vacation rentals and second homes with a few pockets of lower income single service industry workers. Then pare it down more by looking for neighborhoods where homes typically sell for about $300K-$350K or less. There are year round residents with kids in some of the more expensive golf course communities, but not necessarily a critical mass of them.

If you don't have to be in Destin proper, I'd look in the east side of Niceville and the Bluewater Bay development (which has a Niceville zip code). Niceville was recently voted the best place in Florida to raise a family by Business Week, and 95%+ of the homes north of the bay there are occupied year round.

I'm leaving too. I've applied for a job in Cape Coral. Sounds nice but don't know a great deal yet. My brother sprung NJ recently and moved to Stuart Florida. He says it's nice.
Good luck !
