Hi. I have read most of the threads here about moving to Florida but I want to ask a question that is specific to my situation. I'm 31 and thinking of starting a new life (moving from MI to FL) in the near future, hopefully a few months if I can make up my mind. I want to live near the beach and I was wondering if there were any places in FL for a single 31 year old woman with no children I don't own a car so a walkable city with shops, restaurants, grocery stores, et al would be a plus. A place with lots to do and of course a good beach. I've visited Florida before, Orlando and Cocoa Beach, and I loved body boarding there but I don't know if there is anything else to do there but go to the beach and the pier. I work from home and can take my job with me so commuting to work is not an issue. It's about walkable distance to the beach with lots of other fun activities, shopping, and restaurants. I'm not a major party type but every once in a while I would like to go somewhere and I want a city vibe. I hate driving but I wouldn't mind buying a scooter to get around more. I also hope to open my own food (pastry) cart or truck in time so a place where those are popular will help.

Thanks in advance!

I would recommend Miami, but you may be happier in St. Augustine depending on your tolerance for traffic, crowding, and different cultures.

Take a look at st Pete beach. You could live without a car there and the beaches are beautiful. Not near as expensive as the east coast.

I agree. Besides St Pete Beach you might also look at neighboring Madeira Beach, the next town north which is Treasure Island or for a less commercialized area check out my fave, Indian Rocks Beach which is just south of Clearwater Beach. All are served by the very reliable Suncoast Trolley which connects in Downtown Clearwater to Pinellas County Transit routes. Suncoast Beach Trolley

I agree with St. Pete Beach or Treasure Island as possibly being ideal for what you want; plus I don't think it's too expensive there compared to other beach towns. St. Pete has trolleys that run from downtown to the beach, too, so you have transportation into town.

Good luck to you!

Not sure if it would be important to you, but more people from MI live on the west/southwest side of the state rather than the east/southeast. In general there are more midwesterners over there than over here (southeast) where there are more people from the northeast/New England.
I've lived on both sides of the state and would have to generalize (at least to me) that the western side is more user friendly, but the east side is a bit more vibrant.
I think we have better public transportation over here, but that's not really saying much. I would love to live in a neighborhood where I never have to drive because I don't really like dealing with the traffic. As it is I can walk to a lot of places or ride my bike, but I live at the beach where there are a lot of amenities. If I wanted to live somewhere less expensive or less populated a car would be a must.
When I lived in Naples I lived in a big gated apartment community and it was so big that just walking to the gates was a trek!

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll look into St. Petersburg Beach and the other nearby areas mentioned. I'm very interested in the trolleys and the ease on the wallet.
