Winter Haven is more expensive and much better than Lakeland.

Google Polk County schools, etc, do lots of research. Winter Haven has lots of athletic programs for kids. Most areas do. Lots of baseball, tag football, soccor, etc. Winter Haven has a swim team that I know of. Lakeland has Harrison School of the Arts.

You have to research as much as you can, talk to people that do not have an axe to grind, visit the location, than go for it. Most decisions aren't irreversible. Try renting at first until you know whether you will fit in. That is the best way to go.

Good luck and I will help what I can. I live in Polk County. It's as good a place as any. Some standards are lower, just like any place else.

Almost all the schools in Polk County dropped a letter grade, you can go to Polk County 2012 School Grades | theledger.com | The Ledger | Lakeland, FL , it will show you all the grades, there are some Elementary Schools that are an A, but other than that not so much.
There are a lot of areas in Lakeland that are safe and family friendly, but there are some areas you would want to stay away from.
You can check out Watsonclinic.com, and LRMC.com , for some possible job ops for your wife, not sure about machinist jobs though. Employflorida.com is another site to look for work. There are several Apartment complexes where you could rent, some better than others, if you need a 3 bedroom, to rent in a good area , you are looking at around $1,000. You could look at CDC Properties, I know they list a lot of local area houses for rent. I would make sure you had jobs lined up first , or a hefty savings account, meaning enough for 6months to live off of or longer.

Thank you everyone for taking time to reply to this thread. However, after some research and reviewing posts on here as well as others online we have decided Florida would not be the best choice for us. We appreciate your willingness to respond and help us out.
