Hi everyone, So this January I will be heading down to FL to attend college "full time". I am from NY and my car and registration is in my name. The car will be in FL for most of the year. Would I have to change my plates over when I get down there? thank you

When you are a student you do NOT have to change your plates to the state you are attending school until you decide you are going to STAY in that state after you graduate permanently.

Generally, a college student is NOT considered to be a resident of the state they attend college in. So there would be no reason for you to change your state vehicle registration or your driver's license etc.

Your legal residence is the place you call home ( where you return when you're not in school, where you are registered to vote ). Your vehicle is registered to your legal address and does not need to be changed.
Nor do you have to change your driver's license.

Click on the link and read to the very end of the section. It is the applicable Florida law. You are exempt from registration.

Not to mention it would cost you $400 to change it.
