During the next special session later this month, legislators need to take all actions necessary to ensure that property tax relief will be on the January 29 ballot. If an amendment is not placed on the ballot, there will be NO tax relief in 2008 at all.

It's time to take action and contact your Legislator!
........so........we might be back on for January........I'm back where I was......no definitive answers possible I guess .

Thanks for the links though Karen and Macguy .

All the effort you've put in already......you need to stick it out and see what happens for you, don't you think?

Idea: multiple email addresses for you to contact your legislators with - they can't block you that way .
I would feel a lot better if I know of more people trying to fix this. No issue is more important that property taxes- they are the cause of many natives leaving. If the State really wants to keep its longtime residents we need the taxes to be fair. Problem is, I am not getting any younger and would like to live part of my life without fighting the powers that be.

That's part of what I find so disturbing about the issue.......

This absolutely is a change that has long-term effects, but we're at a place in society where we're not really thinking about long-term effects.

Look at how many people in Florida have taken out negative amortization loans or ARMs or any number of "short-term-fix" loans in Florida.......are these homeowners really thinking about where they'll be house-wise in 20 or 30 years? I doubt it.

But I am. If there's one thing that I'd like to be predictable in my life it's my housing. I have seem first-hand what happens to old people when their last years are not secure .

I guess we'll just have to wait and see, but I find it amazing that the entire structure could be changed so easily considering how important it really is .

According to stories in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale papers, the portability concept is back in play and probably will be a part of any new property tax proposal that makes it onto the ballot. Portability would allow homeowners to take their Save Our Homes protection with them when they move. For example, someone downsizing from a $500,000 home to a $300,000 home would not face a huge property tax increase, at least not in theory.

Rick, there is nothing to "fix". The people have whined and snivelled for more socialistic programs and the government has been all too happy to oblige them. They are not going to reduce the amount of theft they've enacted by any significant amount and even in the case of a minor tax decrease, it will be sleight of hand where they steal it by another means.

Can you imagine what it will be like when they enact an income tax here?

There's no place left to run

Perspective: An unfair tax burden

This was written 4 years ago, and I think that Florida is now even worse. I spend 25% of my income in Florida property taxes, besides sales and gas taxes, and the money thrown away for Federal taxes. I am glad that Realtors are increasing pressure for reform- high property taxes will destroy your livelyhood.

I would only support an income tax if the property tax was abolished.

The Save Our Homes portability Trojan Horse | ItsYourTimes.com

I am glad they see this as well. The portability is designed to get "save our homes" repealed. I am not a lawyer, but I have come to the conclusion that the flaw is "save our homes" is that it does not depend on the actual purchase price of a property, but the "assessed value" which can be inaccurate and is all but impossible to challenge. That initial assessment becomes the basis for future taxes, forever. Whether or not a homeowner gets a good deal on the property the tax is set, creating a permanent class distinction between homeowners based on time of sale. Good example, my own home has 15,000 in the lot and 28,000 in the building, completed in 1990. Because of a misunderstanding of the law, the property assessor elected to deny my Homestead cap protection. There are many, many points to challenge the law. My problem came from trusting a lawyer to set up a trust for my properties, and then having him suffer health problems before completing the task. Due to a small error it costs me THOUSANDS yearly while a neighbor who is a snowbird enjoys Homestead protection, despite having his vehicles registered in his home state. I have a headache from reading Southern Reporter but once I get my case history in order I am going ahead. This mess will blow up in the future.
