Be careful when you rent a car in Florida. There are some cashless toll areas without toll booths. One in particular is the Florida Turnpike from Miami south.

Car rental companies are tying to profit from your misfortune. Some are charging a fee which is like $5 or more a day to use their SunPass transponder. If you don't use it and you pass thru a cashless toll you will be charged the toll amount plus up to $25 for each toll.

Best to learn the routes to avoid before coming here. I think Orlando has some of those cashless tolls too.

Perhaps before coming here check the SunPass site and see if you can buy a transponder to use while on vacation. I know you can't just buy the ones they see to stick on the dash, those may not register in time and are not supposed to be removed, but maybe you can, I would check with SunPass.

Basically it's just a scam to get more money out of your rental. They can put one on each car for a minimal cost to you and just charge you afterwards, but they want to profit from your misery.

This also applies to other parts of the country with cashless tolls..

Hopefully the government will put out some regulations to stop this, after all, it is the gov's fault these companies are able to do this.

Was the transponder in the rental car removable or the sticker one that is stuck to the front windshield? If it is the sticker one stuck to the windshield then there is no point in getting a sunpass on your own as you would be charged double? Right now many of the expressways in and around Miami are toll roads with the exception of the 826 and I-95. The 874, 836 and the Turnpike in Miami are all automatic/cashless tolls.
