Before I begin, despite being in the Northeast and it being cold here currently, I promise that there are legitimate reasons for me to be interested in moving to Florida despite weather. DH is applying to all four Nova Southeastern University Physician Assistant programs (Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, and Jacksonville) and I need to learn more about each of these areas in preparation for a possible move. We have no idea which program he will get into and we have only spent time in Orlando and Clearwater, and it has been minimal.
I would love realistic, honest info about each area. We have two children (a boy 7 and a girl 18 months) and of course would be looking for a safe, family-friendly area. I've already looked at salary comparison calculators and know we'd make less money there, but also have seen that housing costs are lower. In all four areas, what would be the best cities/suburbs to look at? We would like to find a 3-4 bedroom rental to start as we're not sure about buying a house there right away. Our combined income is about $63K/year.
Thanks in advance for any and all help, directions you can point me in, etc...

Fort Myers and Jacksonville would offer the more affordable and safest/most family-friendly options versus Orlando or Fort Lauderdale.

In Fort Myers check out the east side of North Ft Myers which is close to campus (10 minutes)
In Jacksonville check out the Julington Creek area on the SW side which is 15-20 minutes from campus.
In Fort Lauderdale check out the Davie/Cooper City area which basically surrounds the campus
In Orlando check out the Dr Phillips area which is about 15 minutes from campus.
