I would imagine a barkeep position should keep one in decent shape there....
I think it would be way cool to live there for like the winter and hang out at the beaches and stuff..

Seems like those jobs would be few and far between and I have a feeling they go to locals when a job opens up. I have been to the Keys a zillion times and can't imagine making a living there if you are an outsider.
My wife's niece lives in the upper keys and works as a waitress. but there is no way she could do that if she didn't live in a trailer that belongs to her brother she pays nothing for. She also got the job through a friend.

yeah it's pretty tough to make a living in KW, and if you're an outsider it's even tougher. Not many decent paying jobs, and not a great place to move up in the world. and socially speaking, if you don't have money to go out in the boat every weekend there's not much to do, and if you're trying to meet someone, oh that's a whole different conversation there! I'm trying to get out for a reason!

I lived in Key West for 9 1/2 years and never had to have more than 1 job. And the first 7 years I was NOT in the service industry. Yes, you can make a living in Key West. The question is can one save money. As in the dating scene, that's a whole different story.

Since Key West is a tourist destination, you can only imagine that you are not alone in thinking its a cool way to live in the winter & hang out....but it's hard to get in.....with the economy the way it is, restaurants/bars have a gazillion of applications, which go right to the circular file, as others have said, if you're not a local...good luck....

Why does Key West suck? I saw Matt Lauer on Today recently down there and Google maps puts you right on the streets. It looks like a fantastic place. I think the hurricanes have entered one of their quiet 30-year cycles (no named storms for June-July--must be a record) so not much worry there. Please explain?

"It looks" is the key phrase here. KW is great for a weekend getaway; after that, it's just bars & seniors getting on/off day trip cruise ships. Google maps can make anywhere look like paradise.

Go visit & find out for yourself.

okay....picture the LA traffic, it is what you will face, driving from Miami to the Keys, however, it's only two lanes, one way south (to keys) and one way north (back to Miami)....then, imagine the traffic being cruise ship traffic that moves at 25 mph....then, add food, liquor & stir, now you've got the idea of Duvall St. during season...

Key West is a blast; just not when everyone is there.
